Material Bank is seeking a Staff Applied Scientist to drive search and recommendations from the ground up in a hands-on research role. You will prototype, test, and validate models, then partner with engineering to productionize the solutions across search and discovery features.

You will lead exploratory data analyses, design experiments, and improve query understanding and NLP. A strong background in ranking systems, plus a quantitative degree, is essential for success in this role.

Qualifikationen

• Track record building search, recommendations, or ranking systems that shipped to real users.
• Advanced degree in a quantitative field (CS/ML/stats) or equivalent hands-on experience.
• Deep understanding of search, ranking, and relevance.
• Strong query understanding and NLP, including embedding-based retrieval.
• Rigorous experimental design and hypothesis testing in ambiguous contexts.
• Hands-on builder capable of prototyping and implementing ideas.
• Experience deploying ML or data systems to production is a plus.

Aufgaben

• Improve search retrieval and ranking; design, tune, and evaluate ranking of results.
• Build our recommendation systems from the ground up with robust algorithms.
• Explore data to identify strategies; run exploratory analyses and ask the right questions.
• Improve query understanding and semantic parsing for diverse real-world queries.
• Raise data quality by identifying and fixing catalog issues.
• Prototype and ship end-to-end models, then partner with engineering to productionize.
• Iterate on image-based or multimodal search and color matching where relevant.
• Define evaluation frameworks and metrics to measure impact as traffic grows.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, and catalog to ship improvements.
