Job summary

Steadily Insurance Agency is hiring for an onsite data scientist in Austin, TX. You will design, build and deploy machine learning models to predict risk, collaborating with Engineering, Product, Operations and Business teams with a high degree of autonomy.

The role requires 5+ years applying data science to production problems, a builder mindset, and a pragmatic approach to balance speed and quality. Technologies include Python and R, with strong collaboration across the org.

You will design, build and deploy machine learning models to predict risk while collaborating across the Engineering organization with a high degree of autonomy.

Responsibilities

• Design and evolve data sets and models with an emphasis on scalability, quality and maintainability, selecting the right techniques to meet business needs.
• Contribute to property level risk estimation, property cost assessment, and the use of aerial image analysis or modeling to derive attributes used by other models.
• Own and lead exploration and implementation of new scientific applications within the product ecosystem to improve risk prediction for individual insureds and for the portfolio as a whole.
• Write clean, maintainable code in R and Python, upholding strong quality standards and best practices.
• Collaborate closely with Engineering, Product, Operations and Business teams to design reliable, cross system solutions.
• Provide clear metrics and insights into model quality, bias and performance to support rigorous scientific evaluation and business impact.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience applying data science methods to production problems; ability to navigate a complex codebase; prior team leadership experience is a plus.
• Builder mindset: you focus on the product side of data, applying modeling and evaluation techniques to real world problems and maximizing business impact.
• Pragmatic approach: balance speed and quality, reuse off the shelf solutions when appropriate, and know when a custom approach is warranted.
• Curious and business-minded: understand how the business operates, recognize when analyses are off, and propose new ideas and insights beyond the obvious requirements.
