Job description

Staff Accountant

The Staff Accountant is responsible for the timely, accurate and consistent preparation and review of accounting work papers and financial analysis. The Staff Accountant will remain current with all GAAP and GASB requirements while assisting the Director of Finance with compliance. Key functions of the staff accountant will include regulatory accounting entries, special government reporting requirements, and general ledger reconciliations.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual journal entries and account reconciliations for assigned accounts, ensuring all activity is recorded, adjustments are calculated and corrections are made timely and accurately.
  • Provide detailed analysis of various general ledger accounts and selected cost centers as assigned to analyze trends, identify variances and make recommendations for change.
  • Recommends actions by analyzing and interpreting data and making comparative analyses while studying proposed changes in both method and material.
  • Researches and interprets changes in accounting and financial reporting policy while applying observations and recommendations to operations.
  • Researches and understands changes in the regulatory environment and provide potential impact to The Authority through data analysis.
  • The staff accountant will perform monthly operating reviews with the department managers to assist with recommendations on improving margins.
  • Takes a leading role in assessing, modifying, developing and implementing more effective processes and/or systems to increase efficiency, accuracy and meaningfulness of information with minimal to no direction.
  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge in computer applications such as databases, spreadsheets and word processing applications in a highly complex environment.
  • Assist senior accountant with Foundation accounting, a non-profit organization that adheres to GAAP standards for Fund based accounting and also includes fund tracking, grant disbursements, donor?restricted assets, financial reporting, and compliance with applicable nonprofit regulations.
  • Exhibit strong critical?thinking abilities, interpersonal skills, and technical expertise, consistently improving data capture, analysis, organization, and automation.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing professional networks, adopting and implementing industry best practices and participating in professional organizations.
  • Protect operations by keeping financial and patient information confidential.
  • Work with the clinical departments on their annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Operate as a self?directed professional with the ability to manage ambiguity and adapt quickly to shifting priorities and business conditions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Business Administration Degree with a major in accounting, finance or business required. Two to four years of accounting experience is required. Advanced Excel skills are required. CPA preferred
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, practices, standards, laws and regulations. Understanding of GAAP and GASB accounting standards.
  • Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong communication, collaboration & analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of internal controls, financial and statistical analysis techniques and report design through the use of report writers, spreadsheets and database software.
  • Advanced analytical and financial modeling skills.
  • Operational finance experience, strong cost accounting understanding, and working knowledge of purchasing processes.
Working Conditions
  • Frequent contact with others: deals with internal and external customers, face-to-face discussions, email and telephone communications. Possible dealings with unpleasant or angry people, public speaking, and conflict situations/resolution.
  • Physical presence onsite is essential. Hearing and vision must be normal or corrected to within normal range. Able to perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
