Job summary

Midland Independent School District is seeking a Staff Accountant to maintain district accounting records and ensure GAAP compliance. The role reports to the Controller and supports the Financial Services department in daily monetary activities.

Ideal candidates have 1–3 years of experience and a Bachelors degree in accounting or related work. The position requires accuracy, strong communication, and the ability to work under regular deadlines within a district environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in accounting or comparable work experience.
  • 13 years of accounting experience.
  • Knowledge of budgeting and governmental accounting.
  • Familiarity with IRS reporting requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that accounting operations are supportive of the instructional goals and objectives of the district.
  • Ensure that the district is in compliance with regulations established by the Texas Education Agencys Financial Accounting Standards Resource Guide and GAAP.
  • Reconcile bank accounts of the district and correct any errors.
  • Prepare journal entries and assist in the maintenance of the general ledger system.
  • Prepare information returns of the district as required by the IRS. Gather information required to prepare and submit 1099s.
  • Review payment history and analysis for any vendor of the district.
  • Assist Departments and Campuses regarding finance related questions and properly delegate questions to specialized departments.
  • Organize, monitor and record returned checks to all district accounts.
  • Reconcile prepaid postage account
  • Reconcile arbiter pay or any other ACH or Wire payments
  • Compile, maintain and file all physical and computerized reports, records and other documents including auditable information relating to this office.
  • Maintain accurate records to assist with unclaimed property report yearly.
  • Maintain fixed asset records up to date and ready to be audited at year end.
  • Perform unclaimed property records and filing before the deadline.
  • Assist and train employees engaged in finance related activities when requested.
  • Collect data for completion of federal, state and local documents as well as assist in public information requests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

POSITION FUNCTION/PURPOSE:

Maintain accounting records of the school district in accordance with state and federal regulatory requirements and in accordance with district policy and procedures

Essential Functions
