Job summary

Southern Power is seeking a Staff Accountant in Atlanta, GA to join the Comptroller’s group. This hybrid role focuses on financial accounting, journal entries, reconciliations and close processes for Southern Power and its subsidiaries.

You will prepare financial statements, support internal controls, and provide variance analyses and information for quarterly and annual reports, including audits and partner statements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent required.
  • 2+ years accounting experience preferred.
  • CPA license (or equivalent) preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and internal controls.

Responsibilities

  • Perform monthly journal entries and account reconciliations for Southern Power and subsidiaries.
  • Prepare audited and unaudited financial statements for partners.
  • Ensure internal controls surrounding responsibilities are adequate and functioning.
  • Provide variance explanations and actual-to-budget analyses as requested.
  • Support information for 10‑Q/10‑K or partnership financials.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual external audit requests and maintain auditor relations.

As an integral member of our Comptroller’s group, you will play a vital role in the financial accounting of Southern Power, a prominent SEC registrant known for its commitment to excellence and innovation in the energy sector. We are seeking talented individuals to fill a staff accounting position within our team. This hybrid position requires four in-office workdays each week at our Atlanta, Georgia office.

Job Responsibilities
  • Perform activities associated with financial accounting for various key areas for Southern Power Company and its subsidiaries, including monthly journal entries, analysis of financial transactions and results, account reconciliations and other accounting duties as assigned (may include activities to incorporate acquired entities).
  • Prepare audited and unaudited financial statements for Southern Power’s partners.
  • Ensure that all internal controls surrounding responsibilities are adequate and functioning.
  • Provide management with detailed actual to budget or actual to actual variance explanations as requested.
  • Provide and assist in obtaining relevant accounting and disclosure information that supports or may be included in Southern Power’s 10‑Q, 10‑K or partnership financials.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual external audit requests as requested, ensuring timely response and maintenance of good working relationship with the external auditor.
Education
Job Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent is required.
  • Advanced degree is a plus.
  • CPA license (or equivalent) is preferred.
Experience, Knowledge, And Skills
  • 2 or more years of accounting experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) is preferred.
  • Experience in preparing journal entries and account reconciliations is preferred.
  • Experience in performing analysis on financial transactions and results is preferred.
  • Experience with accounting systems and tools (Oracle, Excel, SOAR) is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the utility industry and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) System of Accounts is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Sarbanes‑Oxley 404 compliance requirements is a plus.
  • Positive, professional attitude with strong interpersonal and communication skills is required; team player.
  • Proactive working style with ability to handle multiple projects and competing deadlines is required; self‑directed.
  • Strong organizational and problem‑solving skills are required.
