The Opportunity
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
- Function as a lead wastewater process engineer and technical specialist in conventional wastewater treatment.
- Use processes such as physical/chemical primary treatment, conventional activated sludge, biological nutrient removal, fixed‑film processes, membrane bioreactors (MBR), sidestream treatment, tertiary filtration, and disinfection.
- Provide technical guidance over a process team, supervise engineering staff on projects, and collaborate with multidisciplinary design teams to implement complex treatment solutions.

Key Responsibilities
- Prepare a variety of complex engineering deliverables, including process models, process/mass balance calculations, design criteria/basis of design memoranda, process flow diagrams, P&ID drawings, trade‑off studies, and master planning studies.
- Support multiple projects simultaneously with complex technical challenges.
- Serve as a technical specialist with knowledge and skillset providing guidance to project teams in conventional and/or emerging wastewater treatment systems.
- Perform complex research, including applied research activities involving bench, pilot, and full‑scale testing to select or assess performance of treatment processes and incorporate the data into process models.
- Develop recommendations for appropriate treatment processes, equipment and/or materials selection.
- Oversee collection, assimilation, analysis, and management of data for process modeling and design work.
- Prepare process models and carry out complex engineering calculations following standard methods and principles.
Client Focus:
- Assist with identification of key client interests and drivers for ongoing projects and new business prospects and may determine the key clients in some instances.
- Communicate client interests and drivers to project team members and develop creative solutions and approaches to accommodate clients’ goals and objectives.
- Provide support to business development or pursuit activities, including involvement in pre‑positioning meetings, proposal development, client interviews, and identification of winning sales messages.
- Attend and present on state‑of‑the‑art wastewater treatment projects and thought leadership ideas at local, regional and national conferences.
People Management
- Actively foster knowledge management and provide mentoring to junior engineers.
- Assist with performance management process, mentoring, recognition, and any performance improvement actions required for junior engineers.
- Participate in coaching opportunities, career development planning, learning/training, and development of junior staff.
- Provide guidance and direction on department design guides, standards, systems, and applicable engineering codes related to water quality and treatment.
- Assist in developing, maintaining and updating engineering standards; provide technical guidance to others regarding projects and disciplines.
Quality / Continuous Improvement
- Independently apply knowledge and comply with Black & Veatch quality program relative to assigned tasks.
- May be responsible for ensuring compliance with Black & Veatch quality program.
- Provide related guidance and direction to others.
- Support continuous improvement and change management efforts.
- Actively coordinate with all other internal/external team members on moderately complex projects.
Resource Management - (budgets, tools, processes, project support)
- Implement resource management strategy.
- Manage engineering resources for small groups.
Administrative
- Ensure policies, procedures, and processes are effectively implemented and communicated for workgroup.
- Ensure adherence to corporate and division programs.
- May approve expense reports.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree (Master’s or Doctoral) in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering preferred.
- 10 years of experience in wastewater water treatment with at least 5 years in water quality and treatment (water quality analysis, treatment evaluations, process design, regulatory compliance assessments, etc.).
- Advanced knowledge of process design for treatment of municipal wastewater, engineering design principles and applicable design guides and standards related to assigned engineering discipline.
- Experience with using modern process simulators such as BioWin, GPS‑X, Sumo, and/or Simba.
- Established leadership skills with deep understanding of consulting, project execution, client services, and business development.
- Effective written and oral communications, drive for results, priority setting, planning, delegation, directing others, conflict management, informing, listening, dealing with ambiguity, and building effective teams.
Minimum Qualifications
- Require a bachelor’s degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in the applicant’s home country or the country in which the professional is practicing.
- Minimum of 11 years related work experience.
- All applicants must be able to complete pre‑employment onboarding requirements, which may include criminal and civil background check, drug screening, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Certifications
Professional engineering license from any of the states in the USA or ability to obtain one within 2 years of employment required.
Work Environment/Physical Demands
- Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment based upon manager discretion, job performance and work assignments.
- Typical office environment, typical construction environment, extreme weather conditions, high noise level, safety hazards (electric currents, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to chemicals), atmospheric conditions (fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation). Tasks include sitting, walking, talking, hearing, reading, writing, keyboarding, driving, filing, reaching, stooping, crouching, bending, standing for extended periods of time, lifting or carrying up to 40 pounds.

Annual compensation range applicable for the job and location associated with this requisition: $136,810.00 - $225,980.00
