Qualifications

• 10+ years of senior-level experience in virtualization and storage.
• Experience operating within DoD cybersecurity frameworks (RMF, STIG).
• Experience with VMware vSphere/ESXi and vCenter administration.
• Familiarity with Xen and Dell enterprise storage platforms.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and optimize virtualization and storage platforms for mission-critical systems.

Position Title: Sr. Virtualization & Storage Engineer

Clearance Level: Secret

Position Status: 6-month contract to permanent

Pay Rate: $77-83/hr

Conversion Salary: $160-170K

Position Description: Our client is looking for a Senior Virtualization & Storage Engineer for an onsite position in San Diego, CA. They are a government IT and cybersecurity contractor providing technology services to the U.S. Department of Defense and other federal agencies. ISS specializes in cybersecurity, network and systems engineering, IT infrastructure, software development, and technical support for mission-critical government programs.

Responsibilities

You will support the NIWC PAC Information Technology Management Support Services contract. This is a hands‑on senior engineering role focused on designing, optimizing, and sustaining enterprise virtualization and storage platforms that underpin mission-critical systems. You will be providing deep expertise in VMware ESXi environments and Dell enterprise storage systems.

Virtualization Engineering

• Engineer, administer, and optimize VMware vSphere / ESXi environments.
• Manage clusters, resource pools, distributed switches, and high availability configurations.
• Perform host lifecycle management, patching, and upgrades.
• Troubleshoot performance issues across compute, memory, and network virtualization layers.
• Design and maintain resilient virtualization architectures supporting classified workloads.
• Support VM provisioning automation and integration with DevSecOps workflows.

Storage Engineering

• Engineer and administer Dell enterprise storage platforms (PowerStore, Unity, PowerMax, or equivalent).
• Configure and manage SAN/NAS environments.
• Implement LUN provisioning, storage tiering, replication, and snapshot strategies.
• Optimize storage performance and capacity planning.Ensure backup integrity and disaster recovery readiness.
• Troubleshoot storage connectivity and performance issues (iSCSI, FC, NFS, etc.).

Mission & DevSecOps Integration

• Support containerized and traditional VM-based workloads.
• Migration from VMware to Xen experience preferred
• Integrate virtualization platforms into secure CI/CD and infrastructure automation efforts.
• Support compliance with DISA STIGs, RMF controls, and DoD cybersecurity requirements.
• Collaborate with Windows, cloud, network, and security engineers to maintain secure and resilient infrastructure.
• Contribute to automation efforts using scripting (PowerShell, PowerCLI, Python, etc.).
• Maintain architecture documentation and operational runbooks.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of relevant experience; senior-level role with exposure to complex tasks
• Required Certification: IAM II (one of the following) CASP+, CAP, CISM, GLSLC, CISSP (or Associate).
• Experience operating within DoD cybersecurity frameworks (RMF, STIG compliance)
• VMware vSphere / ESXi
