Job summary

FedEx Freight, Inc. is seeking a skilled Mechanic/Technician to maintain and repair our diesel fleet, including tractors, trailers, and forklifts. The role emphasizes preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and safety documentation, with a focus on high-quality repairs.

Five years of vehicle maintenance experience are preferred, plus a Master ASE certification and CDL if possible. The position may require lifting heavy components and operating various hydraulic lifting devices and diagnostic tools.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma (or GED), preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years' experience performing vehicle maintenance.
  • A heavy-duty vehicle maintenance certificate from an accredited school may substitute for one year experience.
  • A Master ASE certification may substitute for two additional years experience.
  • Competency in brakes, electrical, PMI, powertrain, and trailing equipment required.
  • Medium/Heavy Truck Master ASE certification and Class A CDL preferred.
  • Proficient with maintenance programs and diagnostic systems.
  • Knowledge of gas and diesel engines and on-board computers.
  • Experience using precision measurement instruments and lifting devices.
  • Must be able to lift approx. 110 pounds with assistance.
  • Must possess necessary tools to perform tasks.
  • Valid driver's license may be required.
  • Ability to operate manual/automatic transmissions.
  • Ability to enter/exit driver's cabin safely.
  • Paint and body work experience preferred.
  • Ability to work independently or as a team.
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Repairs, modifies and performs preventive maintenance inspections; troubleshoots fleet including tractors, trailers, forklifts and other equipment.
  • Performs advanced diagnostics to identify trouble sources and perform repairs or rebuilds as needed.
  • Makes adjustments to equipment for safe, efficient operation and documents work.
  • Provides guidance and mentoring to less-experienced technicians.
  • Ensures proper documentation of maintenance; completes reports.
  • Performs safety inspections and documents results.
  • Performs paint and body work on vehicles as required.
  • Comply with laws, regulations, and company policies.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Job description

Starting Rate of Pay: $ 34.70 per hour

As a Mechanic / Technician with FedEx Freight, you will use your heavy equipment experience and/or diesel mechanic education to maintain and repair our fleet of diesel tractors. Diesel mechanics are also responsible for trailers, forklifts, and other equipment that requires preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, modifications, and repairs.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

To provide timely, quality, and cost-effective repair and maintenance for vehicle fleet including tractors, trailers, forklifts, and other equipment that requires preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, modifications and repairs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Repairs, modifies and performs preventive maintenance inspections; troubleshoots vehicle fleet including tractors, trailers, forklifts and other equipment
  • Performs advanced diagnostics to identify source of trouble and performs repairs and/or replaces or rebuilds all components and systems
  • Makes necessary adjustments to equipment for safe and efficient operation and prepares required safety documentation
  • Provides guidance and mentoring to less-experienced technicians
  • Ensures proper and accurate documentation of all maintenance performed, completes reports in writing and electronically
  • Performs safety inspections of equipment and documents the work
  • Performs paint and body work on vehicles, as required
  • Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures
  • Perform other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated competency in repair and maintenance of Brakes, Electrical, PMI, Powertrain, and Trailing Equipment required
  • Medium/Heavy Truck Master ASE Certification and Class A CDL preferred
  • Must possess proficient computer skills including maintenance programs, and diagnostic systems
  • Must possess in-depth knowledge of gas and diesel engines and on-board computers
  • Experience using precision measurement instruments oxygen/acetylene equipment, and lifting devices (bottle, floor, wheel, or transmission jacks, floor cranes, etc.).
  • Able to frequently lift components weighing approximately 110 pounds with appropriate equipment and/or assistance from another person
  • Must possess necessary tools to perform assigned tasks
  • Valid driver's license may be required depending on work assignment
  • Ability to safely operate vehicles equipped with manual or automatic transmissions
  • Ability to enter and exit the driver's compartment of the truck and/or behind cab using normal available footholds and handholds
  • Paint and body work experience preferred
  • Ability to work independently and/or as a team member
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills
WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to heavy traffic areas while performing the duties of the job
Exposure to considerable amounts of dust, diesel fumes and noise
May be required to drive service van to off-site locations and perform work
Exposure to climate conditions of the geographic area
Exposure to chemicals, oils, greases, paints or other irritants
Hours may vary due to operational need
