Job summary

Sierra Space Corporation is seeking a senior mechanical systems engineer to oversee the integration, assembly, and testing of spaceflight hardware for a satellite program. You will ensure mechanical interfaces, masses, and environmental requirements are met across the system lifecycle.

The role demands deep experience in systems engineering practices, MF interfaces, and collaboration with SV Lead and Chief Engineer to manage risks and deliver flight-ready hardware.

Qualifications

• Requires Bachelor's degree in a related field (or equivalent work experience in lieu of degree).
• Typically 10+ years of related experience (or Masters +8 years).
• Demonstrated expertise in Systems Engineering principles and lifecycle.
• Experience with requirements management, functional requirements parsing, derivation, and allocation.
• Active Security Clearance is required.

• Lead engineering team focused on cohesive Mechanical system and subsystem design.

• Resolve interference issues between components before hardware reaches the floor.
• Mass properties tracking: mass, CG, and MOI reporting.
• Lead Mechanical test definition and planning.
• Support Mechanical nonconformances with AI&T.
• Design mechanical systems from concept through production and flight test.
• Support integration, manufacturing, ground test, and flight operations.

About the Role

Functionally reporting to the Systems Engineering Department and deployed directly to a satellite program, you will oversee the physical integration, assembly, and testing of spaceflight hardware. You will ensure that structural, thermal, mechanism, and propulsion subsystems come together seamlessly, meet all system-level requirements, and survive the harsh environments of launch and space.

Responsibilities

• Drive proactive Mechanical architecture decisions across the program
• Lead engineering team focused on cohesive Mechanical system and subsystem design

  • Maintain the Mechanical Interface Control Documents (MICDs) between payloads, subsystems, and the bus.
• Resolve interference issues:
  • Identify and resolve physical, envelope, and mating conflicts between components before hardware reaches the floor
• Mass properties tracking:
  • Monitor and report system-level mass, center of gravity (CG), and moments of inertia (MOI)
• Leads Mechanical test definition and planning
• Leads mechanical functional support to AI&T for Mechanical nonconformances.
• Responsible for ensuring Mechanical nonconformances are closed.
• Design mechanical systems from concept through production and flight test.
• Support integration, manufacturing, ground test, and flight operations, incorporating lessons learned into future designs.
• Continuously improve engineering workflows, design standards, and digital engineering capabilities as the team grows.
• Keep an open and innovative mindset to implement improvements in a continuous improvement spirit

Minimum Qualifications

• Requires Bachelor's degree in a related field (or equivalent work experience in lieu of degree or Masters +8 yrs experience).
• Typically 10+ years of related experience (or Masters + 8 years of experience).
• Demonstrated expertise in Systems Engineering principles and practices, including a comprehensive understanding of the systems development lifecycle.
• Progressive experience across the system development lifecycle, including requirements management, functional requirements parsing, derivation, and allocation.
• Progressive experience developing systems architecture and performing systems integration, verification, and validation (V&V) activities.
• Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with technical and specialty subject matter expert engineers to drive systems engineering products.
• An Active Security Clearance is required

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
• Extensive experience with Requirements Management and Model Based Systems Engineering tools and frameworks, such as DOORS, CAMEO EA, Rhapsody, Matlab, and SysML.
• Strong understanding of spacecraft systems, including hardware and software subsystems and components.
• Strong understanding of project management methodologies including risk management and technical performance tracking.
• Strong understanding of technical baseline and configuration management.
• Proven experience in leading projects and mentoring junior and mid-level engineers.
• Experience or certification in INCOSE standards.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to adapt to a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.

Compensation

Pay Range:

$143,700.00 - $197,608.50

Your actual base compensation will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related knowledge and skills, education,experience, internal equity and market competitiveness.
