Job description

Sr System Development Engineer, Mfg Bring Up and Test, AWS Mainstream Compute

Job ID: 10537780 | Amazon Development Center U.S., Inc.

External Job Description

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) Hardware Engineering team creates compute and storage server designs for Amazon’s web services. Our engineers work with leading edge technologies, solve challenging problems, influence the industry’s roadmaps, and develop new and unique solutions that are ahead of the pack. We work in an environment that fosters innovation and creativity. We encourage and invest in new directions and new ideas that will serve our customers better. We sometimes fail, but we learn from such failures and we improve. It is because of the team and our constant focus on the customers, that we are able to develop creative and new designs that set the standards on performance, quality, cost, and operational excellence.

We are looking for a Sr System Development Engineer, Mfg Bring Up and Test to drive manufacturing test excellence across our global server and rack production network.

In this role, you will own the end-to-end manufacturing test strategy for new product introductions — from early design engagement through production ramp and yield optimization. As a technical leader, you will solve complex test architecture challenges at the intersection of hardware design, firmware, and manufacturing operations, ensuring that every server and rack we produce meets the highest quality bar before reaching our data centers.

Key job responsibilities
  • Drive testability requirements and lead design-for-test (DFT) reviews from the earliest design stages to optimize hardware for efficient manufacturing validation, debug, and serviceability.
  • Develop and standardize comprehensive test strategies spanning board-, server-, and rack-level validation across all critical subsystems (compute, memory, networking, power, and storage), enforcing consistency across all production sites globally.
  • Architect and deploy the complete manufacturing test infrastructure and automated test flows at factory sites — including network configurations, boot environments, test fixtures, and provisioning systems — to ensure production readiness ahead of volume ramp.
  • Drive test automation and telemetry to reduce manual intervention, accelerate feedback loops, and achieve significant test-time reductions through risk-based testing and optimized sequencing.
  • Apply a rigorous change management process — validating in lab environments, qualifying at factory sites, and deploying in a controlled, traceable manner to prevent regressions.
  • Lead manufacturing test failure triage and yield improvement during New Product Introduction (NPI), applying structured root cause analysis and corrective actions to achieve first-pass yield targets.
  • Establish data-driven boundaries between manufacturing and post-deployment validation to balance cost, cycle time, and defect escape risk.
  • Drive capacity analysis across test positions, yield projections, and equipment utilization during production ramp to ensure throughput aligns with production targets.
  • Serve as the key technical liaison between internal engineering teams and external manufacturing partners, aligning on build schedules, design changes, and production readiness.
A day in the life

As a Sr System Development Engineer, Mfg Bring Up and Test, no two days are the same. On any given day, you might be leading a design-for-test (DFT) review with hardware engineers to ensure testability is built into products from the earliest design stage, or architecting test strategies that span board-, server-, and rack-level validation across compute, memory, GPU, networking, power, and storage subsystems. You’ll develop and deploy automated test flows and infrastructure at contract manufacturer sites — optimizing test sequencing and building telemetry to accelerate feedback loops. During production, you’ll lead structured root cause analysis and drive yield improvements through data-driven corrective actions. You’ll collaborate across cross-functional teams and global manufacturing partners to ensure every platform is production‑ready ahead of volume ramp.

About the team

The team consists of Hardware Design Engineers, System Design Engineers, Software Development Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, and Technical Program Managers. Our Manufacturing Test Engineer sits at the critical intersection of product design and volume production. We own the systems and processes that validate every piece of hardware AWS deploys, spanning compute, AI/GPU, networking, and storage platforms across Intel, AMD, ARM and Accelerated/GPU architectures. We are builders who thrive on solving complex problems across hardware, firmware, and software domains, and we measure our success by the quality and efficiency of our global manufacturing operations.

Basic Qualifications
  • 5+ years of programming with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell, Ruby experience
  • 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
  • 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • 5+ years of experience in manufacturing test engineering, system validation, or production test development.
  • Experience with server- or rack-level hardware testing and validation in a data center, Original Design Manufacturer (ODM), or contract manufacturer environment.
  • Experience designing or architecting test systems, test infrastructure, or manufacturing validation frameworks.
  • Experience deploying and operating in Linux/Unix environments.
  • Experience leading cross-functional technical initiatives with external manufacturing partners.
  • Experience with test coverage analysis, yield improvement, and root cause investigation methodologies.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with system-level burn-in testing, subsystem validation (CPU/memory/PCIe/power), or hardware validation at scale.
  • Experience with rack-level integration testing and connectivity validation.
  • Knowledge of board-level testing (ICT, BFT, functional test) and server-level validation flows.
  • Experience with test automation frameworks and automated test deployment pipelines for manufacturing test.
  • Experience with fault injection testing and test coverage effectiveness analysis.
  • Experience with BOM validation, firmware programming, or hardware telemetry configuration.
  • Knowledge of statistical process control (SPC), PFMEA, and first-pass yield improvement methodologies.
  • Experience with test fixture design, validation, and correlation studies.
  • Familiarity with ARM-based and x86 server platforms.
  • Experience with test change management processes and controlled deployment across multiple production sites.
