Dexcom Corporation is seeking a senior backend platform architect to lead the design and evolution of scalable cloud‑native systems powering our data and AI‑enabled features. You will champion technical strategy, drive platform investments, and mentor engineers across multiple teams in a fast‑paced, regulated medical tech environment.
You will advance AI‑assisted development, push for robust CI/CD, security, observability, and cost optimization, and partner with Product, Security, SRE, and Data
In this role, you will be a key contributor within Dexcom’s System and Solution Organization, building the next generation of cloud‑native, data‑driven, and AI‑augmented platform capabilities. You will work closely with AI Platform Engineers to deliver scalable backend services, APIs, and the infrastructure powering Dexcom’s rapidly growing AI features. Our team develops at high velocity using modern AI‑assisted development tools while maintaining the reliability and regulatory discipline required for medical‑grade systems (ISO/FDA). If you enjoy solving complex problems, iterating quickly, and leveraging cutting‑edge engineering practices, you will thrive here.
Lead the architecture, design, and evolution of highly scalable cloud-native backend platforms, APIs, event-driven services, and data systems powering critical business and product capabilities. Drive technical strategy and engineering excellence across multiple teams, influencing architectural decisions, technology adoption, and long-term platform investments. Champion AI-assisted software development practices, establishing standards, workflows, and best practices that improve engineering velocity, code quality, and developer productivity. Provide technical leadership throughout the software lifecycle, including solution design, implementation, automated testing, performance optimization, security, observability, deployment, and operational readiness. Design and optimize distributed systems leveraging GCP services such as Firestore, Cloud SQL, Pub/Sub, and other cloud-native technologies to ensure scalability, reliability, and cost efficiency. Partner closely with Product, Architecture, Security, SRE, Data, and Engineering leaders to define technical roadmaps, resolve complex cross-functional challenges, and deliver strategic initiatives. Lead modernization efforts for legacy platforms and services, driving simplification, maintainability, and operational excellence across the ecosystem. Mentor and coach senior engineers, fostering technical growth, promoting engineering best practices, and raising the technical bar across the organization. Drive continuous improvements in developer experience, CI/CD automation, system observability, resiliency, and cloud cost optimization. Provide technical leadership during production incidents and critical escalations, leading root cause analysis and ensuring long‑term corrective actions.
Extensive experience architecting and delivering large‑scale distributed cloud‑native systems. Deep expertise in backend development using Python, Kotlin, and modern software engineering practices for highly available, mission‑critical applications. Proven track record designing scalable event‑driven architectures using technologies such as Pub/Sub, Kafka, or equivalent messaging and streaming platforms. Strong experience building data‑intensive services utilizing Firestore, Cloud SQL, and other cloud‑native persistence technologies. Expert knowledge of cloud platforms, preferably Google Cloud Platform (GCP), including security, reliability, observability, and cost optimization best practices. Demonstrated ability to lead technical strategy and influence architectural decisions across teams, organizations, and product areas. Strong experience with containerized and cloud‑native deployment models, including Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and Infrastructure-as-Code practices. Proven ability to drive adoption of AI‑assisted development tools and workflows while maintaining high standards for software quality, security, and maintainability. Exceptional problem‑solving, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to align engineering investments to business outcomes. Experience mentoring senior engineers and serving as a recognized technical leader who elevates engineering practices across an organization.
