Job Overview

The Sr. Staff Engineer, Backend will architect and lead the distributed systems that power our lending operating system. This hands‑on technical leadership role requires expertise in deep systems design, complex business logic, and the realities of operating mission‑critical services in a regulated industry. The role includes setting the technical direction for backend engineering, mentoring a team of engineers, and collaborating with product, QA, credit, data, and frontend teams to ship integrated, production‑grade solutions that move capital for small businesses.

Responsibilities

• Own the backend architecture of Lendistry’s lending platform, including service decomposition, domain boundaries, data ownership, and inter‑service communication.
• Define and promote backend engineering best practices for API design, language and framework choices, testing strategy, observability, and operational standards.
• Lead cross‑functional initiatives that span backend, frontend, data, credit, and compliance, driving common goals and shared solutions.
Design, build, and maintain complex, scalable backend services in a microservices environment, ensuring high quality, performance, and safety of production systems.
• Implement RESTful APIs, event‑driven workflows, and asynchronous processing pipelines for long‑running lending operations.
• Develop and maintain core platform primitives such as multi‑tenancy, tenant‑aware routing, authentication, authorization, caching, workflow orchestration, and shared infrastructure modules.
• Translate complex business and compliance requirements—including underwriting policy, SBA program rules, state lending regulations, and investor contracts—into secure, auditable backend solutions.
• Ensure data integrity and auditability, making every state change in a loan traceable, reconcilable, and explainable to auditors, regulators, and partners.
• Diagnose and prevent performance, scalability, and reliability issues in production, implementing observability, structured logging, metrics, distributed tracing, and alerting.
• Harden security at the service layer, covering authentication, authorization, input validation, secret management, and defense‑in‑depth for services handling PII and financial data.
• Lead mentorship, coaching, and architecture reviews for backend engineers, elevating the team’s craft and standards.
• Stay current with emerging backend, cloud, and distributed systems technologies, evaluating and piloting tools and patterns that improve developer velocity, platform reliability, and product capability.
• Drive AI‑assisted development practices, using AI coding assistants for generation, refactoring, testing, documentation, and review while maintaining rigorous security and quality controls.

Qualifications

• 7+ years as a software engineer building complex, scalable backend and distributed systems, preferably in multi‑tenant SaaS or regulated industries.
• Proficiency in a statically‑typed or JVM‑based language (Java, Kotlin, Scala, Go, C#, or TypeScript on a type‑safe stack) with deep knowledge of object‑oriented and functional design patterns.
• Extensive experience with microservices: service decomposition, inter‑service communication, contract design, relational database optimization, and operational discipline.
• Advanced skills in relational database design, query optimization, indexing, transactions, and data migration at scale.
• Expertise in multi‑tenant system design, including data isolation, tenant‑aware routing, and per‑tenant configuration management.
• Platform and integration expertise: RESTful API design, gRPC, event‑driven communication, JWT/OAuth2/OIDC, fine‑grained access control, message queues, task scheduling, workflow orchestration, caching strategies, cloud services on AWS, and observability tooling.
• Strong judgment in translating business requirements into technical solutions, balancing engineering ideals with business realities.
• Demonstrated hands‑on experience with AI coding assistants in a professional environment.
• Additional preferred qualifications: B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or equivalent, experience in fintech or regulated industries, knowledge of compliance and audit requirements (e.g., SOC2, GLBA), experience with credit bureau integrations, and knowledge of event‑sourced or domain‑driven architectures.

Compensation

The U.S. base salary range for this full‑time position is $99,100 – $185,000 annually, determined by role, level, and location.

Physical Requirements

This is a stationary position that requires frequent sitting (~95%) and occasional standing, lifting up to 20lbs, walking, kneeling, bending, twisting, and reaching above the shoulder.
