Job summary

Cox Fleet is seeking a Sr. Shop Trailer Mechanic for a dedicated on-site shop position. The technician will perform DOT inspections, preventive maintenance, and a range of light to heavy repairs, including aluminum work, welding, fabrication, and panel replacement.

You will lead on-site technical support and serve as the customer’s lead on jobsites. Responsibilities include diagnostics, triage of complex repairs, tool and parts coordination, and adherence to safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Must have high school diploma or GED with related field experience or higher degree/certification and 3–7 years of experience.
  • Possesses and uses a set of hand tools necessary to perform duties.
  • OEM training and certifications are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform certified DOT inspections and preventative maintenance on light to heavy duty trailers in a shop setting.
  • Diagnose, repair, and service trailer components including brakes, air lines, lifts, and electrical systems.
  • Document work with RO, upload pictures, and ensure timely completion of DOT forms and parts used.
  • Coordinate with Service Writer and Parts Department to obtain needed parts and approvals.

Job description

JOB SUMMARY

Cox Fleet is currently hiring a Sr. Shop Trailer Mechanic. This is a dedicated on‑site shop position; no emergency side‑of‑the‑road repairs are performed. The Sr. Shop Trailer Technician will perform certified DOT inspections, preventative maintenance inspections, light and advanced repairs, and other duties such as aluminum and chem‑lite work, trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps and engines, liftgates, brake chambers, welding, fabrication, and replacement of panels, body and framework. The role requires advanced diagnostics and triage of complicated repairs by Shop Trailer Technician I/II and serves as the customer’s lead and technical consultant on jobsites.

DUTIES
  • Always follows and complies with safe operating practices and procedures.
  • Independently determines parts required for each job and interacts with the Shop Parts Department to obtain them.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment and assists in cleanup at the end of each day for tools, parts, and equipment.
  • Applies knowledge acquired through formal training or on‑the‑job experience to perform the job; works with, understands, and evaluates technical information related to the job.
  • Works with the Service Writer to assess customer needs, provide information or assistance, resolve problems, or satisfy expectations.
  • Manages concurrent assigned tasks, making effective judgments to prioritize work activities and time allocations.
  • Acts with integrity, demonstrates honesty, keeps commitments, and maintains confidentiality and ethical standards.
  • Performs scheduled preventative maintenance (‘PM’), DOT inspections, and follow‑up repairs on light, medium, and heavy‑duty vehicles in a shop environment.
  • Performs routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment.
  • Uses hand tools, precision instruments, trailer tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
  • Documents work according to company standards and uploads pictures of work performed, parts used, and findings observed on Repair Orders (“RO”) using the company‑issued device and/or Karmak application.
  • Accurately completes DOT forms and all other documentation in a timely fashion.
  • Maintains a high level of productivity and works within standard repair times.
  • Communicates with the Shop Manager and support team to obtain approvals on repair estimates, retrieve purchase order numbers, and discuss RO findings.
  • Performs all work in compliance with safety, health, environmental policies, and federal regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT).
  • Participates in and completes all company‑required safety training.
  • Maintains shop‑assigned service trucks, conducts safety checks, and performs daily pre/post trip inspections.
  • Performs minor adjustments and repairs on various trailer equipment and systems including aluminum and chem‑lite, trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps and engines, liftgates, brake chambers, and steering systems.
  • Adheres to company policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Diagnoses, adjusts, and repairs trailer equipment and systems, including welding, fabrication, replacement of panels, body and framework.
  • Identifies problems, determines accuracy and relevance of information, and uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives.
  • Inspects, tests, and diagnoses defective equipment using test instruments such as handheld computers and pressure gauges.
  • Assists Shop Trailer Technician I with diagnostics and part procurement.
  • Supports Shop Trailer Technician I/II in obtaining correct parts and performing advanced diagnostics and triage of complicated repairs.
REQUIREMENTS
  • High School Diploma/GED and 5 years’ experience in a related field, or a combination such as a higher degree/certification beyond a HS diploma/GED in a related discipline and 3 years of experience, or 7 years of experience.
  • Possesses and supplies a set of hand tools necessary to perform the required job duties.
  • OEM training and certifications are preferred.
  • Participates in and completes all company‑required training.
  • Is at least 21 years or older due to interstate operating authority commerce regulations.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of trailer parts and systems, including design, use, repair, and maintenance.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS OR OBTAINED WITHIN 18 MONTHS
  • ASE T8 (PMI) certification
  • ASE 608/609 certification
