Job description

About Renaissance Philanthropy

Renaissance Philanthropy is a nonprofit organization with a mission to fuel a 21st-century renaissance by increasing the ambition of philanthropists, scientists, and innovators. The organization builds time-bound, thesis-driven philanthropic funds to support ideas that advance entire fields and drive transformative change across sectors. Renaissance Philanthropy operates as a 501(c)(3) organization and has established itself as a strategic player in the global philanthropy and innovation ecosystem. The organization has demonstrated significant impact and reach through its partnerships with prominent global funders and institutions. Renaissance Philanthropy works alongside The Walton Family Foundation, Coefficient Giving, the United Kingdom’s Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA), and Germany’s SPRIND, among other partners. These collaborations span both private and public sectors, reflecting the organization’s commitment to cross-sector innovation and impact. In its first two years of operation, Renaissance Philanthropy has catalyzed substantial funding for science, innovation, and technology initiatives. The organization has raised $268 million in funding for initiatives housed at Renaissance Philanthropy and unlocked an additional $265 million in direct funding for other organizations, totaling $533 million in catalyzed funding. This track record demonstrates the organization’s effectiveness in mobilizing resources and creating partnerships that drive meaningful advancement in its focus areas.

About this Role

The Center for Civic Futures (CCF) is a program of Renaissance Philanthropy dedicated to aligning government leaders, technology builders, and partners around transformative opportunities presented by artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. The program envisions a future where governments can effectively harness emerging technologies to meet the needs of a changing world while standing at the forefront of responsible AI development that drives positive change for everyday people. Renaissance Philanthropy is seeking an experienced Senior Program Manager to take on strategic leadership and end-to-end execution of key initiatives within the Center for Civic Futures’ Health & Human Services portfolio. This role reports to the Director of HHS Programs and plays a critical role in shaping program strategy, managing senior stakeholder relationships, and ensuring the successful design, delivery, and continuous adaptation of convenings, partnerships, and cross-functional initiatives. The Senior Program Manager will work across the Center for Civic Futures’ Health & Human Services initiatives, collaborating directly with state agencies and partner organizations to modernize public benefits delivery through human-centered design and artificial intelligence. A major focus of this position will be launching and leading the Center for Civic Futures Government Accelerator, a new initiative designed to help state Health & Human Services agencies design and launch AI-enabled modernization projects. This position is fully remote for US-based candidates with occasional travel required for convenings and partner meetings.

Responsibilities
  • Lead complex initiatives from planning through implementation and adaptation, adjusting course as new information and constraints emerge
  • Build trusting, durable relationships across government, nonprofit, community, and technical stakeholders, including senior officials and executives
  • Manage complex workflows, timelines, dependencies, and deliverables across multiple concurrent initiatives
  • Convene diverse stakeholders, synthesize complex information, and drive productive collaboration and decision-making
  • Take initiative to navigate uncertainty and maintain momentum and team morale in evolving, loosely-structured environments

  • Draft materials for senior government, philanthropic, and executive audiences
  • Bring structure, timelines, and accountability to loosely defined initiatives
Requirements
  • 6–9 years of relevant professional experience in civic technology, public sector innovation, health and human services, nonprofit strategy/operations, digital services, or related fields
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex initiatives, programs, teams, or multi-stakeholder projects in ambiguous, fast-paced environments
  • Track record of independently taking a program from strategy through implementation and adaptation, not just execution against a set plan
  • Experience working directly with state government agencies, public sector organizations, or mission-driven initiatives focused on public benefits or human services
  • Strong strategic and organizational judgment with ability to prioritize across multiple high-stakes workstreams without losing follow-through
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including drafting materials for senior government, philanthropic, and executive audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage relationships with senior stakeholders

  • Strong working knowledge of AI applications within public benefits and human services contexts

  • Proactive, resourceful, and solutions-oriented approach with comfort making judgment calls with incomplete information
  • Proficiency with project management and collaboration tools such as Asana, Slack, and Google Workspace
  • Comfort with working as both a builder and a leader with willingness to do hands-on execution while also setting strategy and direction
  • Experience managing or mentoring junior staff, contractors, or cross-functional contributors (preferred)
  • Experience standing up new programs, teams, or initiatives from the ground up without fully built-out infrastructure or team (nice to have)
  • Background in nonprofit strategy, consulting, or government leadership roles (nice to have)
  • Familiarity with AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Copilot (nice to have)
  • Direct experience working in or with state health and human services agencies or benefits programs (nice to have)

  • Opportunity to lead and launch new initiatives
  • Work within a mission-driven organization focused on science, technology, and innovation
  • Collaborative environment with high-agency team members
  • Access to networks of exceptional talent and global partnerships
