Job summary

Grace Corporation is seeking a Senior Process Design Engineer to lead the process engineering function for capital projects and ensure design integrity from PFDs to P&IDs. The role requires coordinating with Process Technology, Business Units, and Operations to deliver compliant design packages.

You will participate in PHA/HAZOP activities, support startup, and supervise 3rd party engineering teams while adhering to Grace’s Methodology. Travel up to 25% may be required.

Qualifications

• BS degree in Chemical Engineering or related field.
• 10+ years in chemical/petrochemical or related manufacturing industries.
• Experience in process design and capital project front-end design.
• Willingness to travel up to 25%, including international.

Job Description

The Senior Process Design Engineer will have direct responsibility for the Process Engineering function as it relates to capital projects. The individual will direct, coordinate, and exercise functional authority for planning, organization, control, integration, and completion of process scopes and related documents within area of assigned responsibility. The Senior Process Design Engineer must have a thorough understanding of process equipment design including pumps, heat exchangers, vessels, etc. Must be able to apply process tools to design piping systems, complete material and energy balances, and perform process optimization studies. Individual will coordinate activities concerned with technical developments, scheduling, and resolving engineering design issues.

The Senior Process Design Engineer will report directly to the Americas North Design Engineering Lead. The successful candidate will be located at either the Grace Headquarters in Columbia, Maryland or in the Great Lakes Region.

Responsibilities

• Evaluates and approves process design changes and specifications
• Develops in collaboration with Process Technology, Business Units and Operations and assures adherence to a standard Basis of Design (BOD) package which includes Scope of Work, PFDs, P&ID’s and material balance
• Develops front end packages
• Developing equipment and services bid documentation and reviewing vendor quotations and issues procurement recommendations
• Evaluates and approves design changes, specifications, and drawing releases
• Evaluating EH&S design requirements and ensuring adherence to corporate policies
• Participates as engineering representative in PHA’s (Process Hazard Analysis) and HAZOP’s
• Supports start up activities from a process engineering perspective
• Prioritizing workloads and effectively managing 3rd party engineering teams to execute assigned workloads
• Firm understanding and compliance with the Grace Project Methodology (GPM) process

Physical Requirements and Environment

• Must be able to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb stairs and ladders over 100 ft.
• Must be willing to wear PPE (Personal Protective equipment) including but not limited to hard hat, protective eyewear, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, Level A suit, full face respirator
• Ability to work in a high hazard environment, including adverse weather conditions, elevated spaces, confined spaces, extreme temperatures, and noisy surroundings.
• Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a pilot plant facility with highly hazardous materials

Required Qualifications

• BS degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related degree
• 10+ years’ experience within chemical, petrochemical, specialty chemical, refining, pharmaceutical, or related manufacturing industries.
• Experience in process design and process engineering work in the chemical industry
• Proven ability to execute front end design for capital projects
• Experience with overseeing Chemical Industry Contractor’s deliverables
• Up to 25% of travel including international may be required

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional Engineer (PE) license
• Experience in catalyst manufacturing, specialty chemicals, petrochemicals, refining, or material science industries.
• Experience with process scale-up, pilot plant operations, and commercialization of new technologies.
• Familiarity with environmental compliance requirements and sustainability initiatives.
• Experience leading global or multi-site engineering projects.
• Knowledge of process simulation software such as Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, CHEMCAD, or equivalent.
• strong oral/written communication skills and the ability to interact and work in a team environment
• Demonstrated ability to network effectively within the business unit and to stakeholders and collaborators outside the team
• Very good understanding or working knowledge of Grace’s process technology/unit ops and operations experience
• Knowledge of Grace’s internal IP’s and Industry Codes and Standards
