Job summary

Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems in Melbourne, FL seeks a Mechanical Design Engineer to design and test support equipment for military aircraft. The role involves data gathering, requirements development, supplier interfacing, and basic stress analysis.

The candidate will work with manufacturing to meet quality, delivery, and cost goals and travel occasionally to site locations as needed. A STEM degree with CAD/FEA experience and a Secret clearance are required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's in STEM with related engineering experience.
  • Experience generating detailed manufacturing drawings from CAD.
  • Active US Government Secret clearance or eligibility to obtain SAP clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical systems for test, measurement, and handling equipment for aircraft.
  • Gather data, develop requirements, interface with suppliers, perform basic stress/tolerance analysis.
  • Liaise with manufacturing to ensure quality, delivery, and cost objectives.
  • Develop test plans and perform environmental testing of equipment.
  • Test and integrate equipment on aircraft and support equipment.
  • Use CAD/3D modeling tools (NX, Pro/E, CATIA) for drawings and specs.
  • May travel to various sites to demonstrate equipment function.

Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Melbourne, FL.

Essential Functions
  • Mechanical design of test, measurement, and handling equipment used on military aircraft.
  • Gather data, requirement development, interfacing with suppliers, and performing basic stress and tolerance analysis.
  • Act as manufacturing liaison during build process of your project to ensure overall quality, delivery, and cost objectives are achieved.
  • Develop test plans and performing environmental testing of Support Equipment.
  • Testing and integration of manufactured Support Equipment on aircraft.
  • Basic knowledge of design and analysis tools for mechanical design as well as basic drafting skills to include a working knowledge of solid modeling techniques (NX, Pro Engineer, or Catia).
  • The selected candidate should thrive in a fast‑paced work environment with high expectations, significantly diverse assignments, collaborative/team settings across all levels.
  • Candidate must also be willing to occasionally travel to various site locations to demonstrate the function of the designed Support Equipment.
Basic Qualifications
  • Must have a Bachelor's in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an accredited university AND 8 years of relevant engineering experience OR a Master’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an accredited university AND 6 years of engineering experience.
  • Experience using CAD software in generating detailed engineering drawings used for manufacturing of mechanical and/or electrical assemblies.
  • Must have an active US Government Secret clearance (with a background investigation within the past 6 years or enrolled into Continuous Evaluation).
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) clearance, within a reasonable amount of time as determined by business needs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Current Special Access Program (SAP) access.
  • Experience using FEA software in performance of stress analysis of mechanical and/or electrical assemblies to include static and dynamic analysis to MIL-STD-810 requirements.
  • FAA A&P Certificate or equivalent aircraft maintenance background.
  • Experience developing manufacturing drawings to GD&T standards.
Primary Level Salary Range

Primary Level Salary Range: $111,700.00 - $167,500.00 The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
