Job description

Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager and/or Team Leader, the Sr. Phlebotomist II independently performs venipuncture and capillary punctures on adult and pediatric patients and is familiar with patient and specimen requirements. Performs processing of specimens and routes specimens to the appropriate laboratory for analysis. Performs a variety of clerical duties associated with the operation of the laboratory computer system.

  • Charge responsibility, train new employees, teach students, and perform special projects as assigned.
  • Supervise the section in the absence of a Manager or Team Leader.
  • Use EPIC computer system modules.
  • Rotate weekends and holidays, and work at off‑site locations as needed.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Prepare workspace and/or collection cart in advance of collection with all essential supplies.
  • Greets patients and explains procedure in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Reassures each patient to make them comfortable with the procedure.
  • Verifies patient identification according to LHMC policy for inpatients and outpatients.
  • Utilizes the Epic computer system to access appropriate encounters, enters required information, and verifies patient demographics and orders.
  • Ensures proper forms accompany specimens according to policy.
  • Cancels tests or defers draw time for tests that cannot be collected, documents information in the computer, and notifies appropriate personnel.
  • Collects required insurance information from patient when necessary.
  • Uses other computer applications as necessary.
  • Performs proficient venipuncture per NCCLS standards, including proper site preparation, technique, and use of proper collection devices.
  • Properly labels specimens in accordance with LHMC policy.
  • Delivers specimens within established time frames and follows special handling instructions.
  • Processes specimens for analysis according to written protocols.
  • Acts as a resource person, researches and investigates problems, and follows through with solutions.
  • Accepts, completes, and reports on special assignments.
  • Recognizes and addresses unreasonable patient behavior, intervenes, and recommends solutions.
  • Consults with manager, team leader, or appropriate personnel when needed.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Serves as an independent resource to colleagues, medical staff, and patients regarding collection protocols.
  • Assumes leadership roles in major department areas and acts as a resource person.
  • Performs in‑charge responsibilities, reassigning daily tasks to ensure completion of workload.
  • Oversees department in the absence of a manager.
  • Contributes new ideas and participates in departmental changes.
  • Supports fiscal management by contributing to resource optimization and revenue enhancement.
  • Maintains appropriate inventory levels.
General Expectations
  • Incorporate LHMC standards of behavior and mission statement in daily activities.
  • Comply with all LHMC and department‑specific policies.
  • Follow established safety procedures per the Laboratory Safety and Infection Control Manuals.
  • Maintain courteous and effective interactions with patients, physicians, management, visitors, and other health‑care team members.
  • Demonstrate understanding of job description, performance expectations, and competency assessment.
  • Commit to meeting and exceeding customer needs and adhere to customer service standards.
  • Complete at least 2 hours of continuing education per year to stay current in scientific knowledge.
Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification: Completion of a phlebotomy certification program with externship preferred; ASCP Board of Registry certification preferred.
  • Skills & Knowledge:
    • Manual dexterity and acuity for accurate venipuncture on difficult draws.
    • Interpersonal verbal and written English communication skills.
    • Ability to work accurately under pressure and handle high patient volume.
    • Ability to prioritize work to meet patient wait times and complete phlebotomy rounds.
    • Ability to supervise daily activities in the absence of a manager.
    • Ability to provide technical guidance, instruction, and leadership to lower‑level staff.
    • Problem‑identification and corrective‑action skills.
    • Basic computer literacy.
  • Experience: Five years of full‑time phlebotomy experience with at least one year at LHMC.
Pay Range

$23.15 – $31.16 per hour (base hourly wage). Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate based on seniority, education, training, certifications, geography, job responsibilities, shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime, and other applicable factors.

Vaccination Requirement

All staff must be vaccinated against influenza (flu) as a condition of employment.
