Job description

Overview

The Aerospace Corporation is the trusted partner to the nation’s space programs, solving the hardest problems and providing unmatched technical expertise. As the operator of a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC), we are broadly engaged across all aspects of space— delivering innovative solutions that span satellite, launch, ground, and cyber systems for defense, civil and commercial customers. When you join our team, you’ll be part of a special collection of problem solvers, thought leaders, and innovators. Join us and take your place in space.

The Defense Systems Group (DSG) provides analysis-based decision support to senior leaders on space architectures, policy and strategy, development planning, system of systems engineering, and threat reduction to help shape the future space missions across the national security space (NSS) enterprise. DSG is unique at Aerospace as it not only directly supports major customers, including US Space Force, U.S Space Command, Air Force Materiel Command, and senior leadership at the Pentagon, but also provides a broad range of services and support across the national space enterprise, maintaining vertical responsibilities with customers but also horizontal, matrixed responsibilities across the corporation. DSG also assists the Space Force Space Systems Command (SSC) in the conception, design, acquisition, launch and operations of satellite, launch vehicle, ground control, and range systems.

As a Sr. Phased Array Radar Hardware Engineer (Sr. Project Engineer) within the Space Domain Awareness (SDA) Sensors & Analytics (S2A) department within the Enterprise Ground Division, you will perform duties in support of the chief engineer and program manager for the multi‑billion dollar for the Ground Based Radar Digitization (GBRD) upgrade of UEWR, PARCS, Cobra Dane, and Eglin radars. This includes providing technical leadership for acquiring, designing, building, integrating, and testing these ground‑based radars for SDA and work with stakeholders across the national security space enterprise.

The selected candidate will be required to work full-time, on-site at our facility in Colorado Springs, CO.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Serve as a radar hardware chief engineer and integration leader with government, other FFRDCs, and SETA personnel directly supporting the GBRD program manager and lead engineer
  • Work on multi‑phase projects to bring new radar capabilities into operations for the SDA mission
  • Initiate acquisition of Aerospace Engineering Technology Group teams, and lead analyses in requirements development, risk evaluation, sensor performance, and system‑of‑systems engineering
  • Act as spokesperson for, and as a senior mentor to, government customers on hardware design, performance, and operations for new SDA radar systems capability
What You Need to be Successful
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited program in Remote Sensing, Astronomy, Physics, Mathematics, Communications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical engineering discipline
  • 12 or more years of technical or programmatic experience in radar systems
  • Track record of leading matrixed technical teams
  • Substantive experience with the DoD acquisition process
  • Proven ability to identify and assess risk areas and to work closely with engineering and program office peers, customers, and contractor personnel to resolve issues quickly
  • Willing to travel domestically/internationally approx. 10%
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance, issued by the US government. US citizenship is required to obtain a clearance.
How You Can Stand Out
  • Masters or PhD degree from an accredited program in Remote Sensing, Astronomy, Physics, Mathematics, Communications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical engineering discipline
  • Familiarity with the space domain awareness mission area
  • Experience with ground‑based phased array radar systems that includes experience in system development, acquisition, or operations
  • Knowledge of the DoD acquisition lifecycle gained through time in a systems program office, DoD laboratory or test organization, or other DoD acquisition‑related organization
