Job summary

Trane Technologies in Clarksville, TN, is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the design and development of cabinet and structural systems for unitary HVAC products. You will guide projects from concept through production, applying expertise in structural steel, sheet metal design, and manufacturing processes to deliver durable, cost-efficient solutions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering required.
  • 5+ years experience leading technical aspects of product design projects, validation testing, and root cause analysis.
  • Expertise in structural steel and sheet metal design.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of cabinet and structural systems for unitary HVAC products, from concept generation to production.
  • Apply strong expertise in structural steel and sheet metal design, manufacturing processes, fastening methods, coatings, sealing strategies, and thermal/mechanical performance.
  • Develop and validate designs through engineering analysis and laboratory testing, including use of simulation tools such as FEA and test plans.
  • Work within product and regulatory requirements, including UL, AHRI, ASHRAE, IBC, and DOE expectations.
  • Demonstrate senior cross-functional leadership in product development and problem solving, driving standard work and FRACAS.
  • Participate in product improvement activities to identify cost-reduction opportunities and lead design changes.
  • Provide leadership to engineering teams including engineers, designers, lab technicians

What’s in it for you:

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer at Trane Technologies, you will play a key role in shaping the next generation of commercial HVAC products by leading the design and development of structural and cabinetry systems for unitary equipment. This position offers the opportunity to guide projects from early concept and feasibility through prototype, production, and sustaining, while delivering durable, cost-effective, and high-performing solutions. You will apply deep expertise in structural steel, sheet metal design, manufacturing methods, and engineering analysis to solve complex technical challenges and ensure product quality, reliability, and compliance. Working across cross-functional teams, you will provide technical leadership, drive continuous improvement, and support innovative product enhancements that advance sustainability goals.

What you will do:
  • Lead the design and development of cabinet and structural systems for unitary HVAC products, including concept generation, feasibility assessment, component selection, detailed design, and support from prototype through production and sustaining.
  • Apply strong expertise in structural steel and sheet metal design, manufacturing processes, fastening methods, coatings, sealing strategies, and thermal/mechanical performance to deliver robust, cost-effective product solutions.
  • Develop and validate structural and cabinet designs through engineering analysis and laboratory testing, including use of simulation tools such as FEA, test plan development, data analysis, and design refinement to ensure performance, durability, and quality.
  • Work effectively within applicable product and regulatory requirements, including familiarity with UL, AHRI, ASHRAE, IBC, and DOE expectations as they apply to commercial HVAC product development and validation.
  • Demonstrate senior-level cross-functional leadership in product development and problem solving, including translating requirements into executable plans, driving standard work, supporting field issue resolution, and applying disciplined engineering methods such as Design for Reliability, Lean, Six Sigma, and FRACAS.
  • Participate in product improvement activities to identify opportunities to improve product performance and reduce cost. Lead projects to implement subsequent product design changes.
  • Provide leadership to engineering teams including engineers, designers, lab technicians
What you will bring:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Arts/Sciences (BA/BS) in an Engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years experience leading technical aspects of product design projects, validation testing, and root cause analysis.
  • Expertise in structural steel and sheet metal design.
  • Demonstrated experience with being able to deliver and lead technical designs to meet project and product requirements.
Annual Base Salary Range or Hourly Base Pay Range:

$89,585.00 - $124,950.00
