Job summary

Kiewit Architectural & Engineering seeks a Sr. Mechanical Engineer/HVAC Project Lead in Lenexa, KS. The role leads HVAC design for complex facilities, guiding projects from concept through construction while mentoring junior staff and coordinating with clients.

Ideal candidates have 12+ years in building design, PE license (preferred), and strong experience with heat transfer, energy modeling, and centralized utility plants. Relocation assistance offered.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or architectural engineering.
  • 12+ years of experience in Building design.
  • PE license is a plus.
  • Experience with HVAC systems including chilled water, dehumidification, hydronic heating, steam, and gas piping.
  • Proficient in HVAC load modeling and design calculations.
  • Knowledge of HVAC Codes and Standards (ASHRAE, NFPA, SMACNA, UFC).
  • Experience using building modeling software such as Trane Trace 700 or Carrier HAP.

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer with strong HVAC design and project leadership experience to join our growing Buildings Group. This position is ideal for an engineer who is ready to expand beyond traditional design responsibilities and take on a leadership role, guiding projects from initial client engagement through construction completion. The successful candidate will lead multidisciplinary teams, mentor junior staff, collaborate directly with clients, and deliver technically sound solutions for complex facilities. This role provides a clear path toward senior leadership and practice development responsibilities.

Location

For mid-career and Senior, this role can be based in any of the following offices: Lenexa Kansas office, Houston Texas office, Dallas or Forworth Texas or Lone Tree Colorado.

We will consider individuals with 15+ years’ of Building Mechanical experience with EPC experience, in other locations, with strong experience in one or more of our market sectors., that have experience leading projects and teams, with PE licensure.

We offer relocation assistance to the Lenexa/Kansas City area (our Industrial headquarters) only.

Responsibilities
What You'll Do
Technical Leadership
  • Lead HVAC system design for complex facilities, supporting various contract models from concept to commissioning (EPC, D/B).
  • Develop Basis of Design reports.
  • Perform load calculations and energy analyses.
  • Design central utility plants and campus distribution systems.
  • Oversee the preparation of construction documents.
  • Conduct technical reviews and mentor engineering staff.
  • Lead projects from conceptual planning through construction.
  • Develop project scopes, budgets, and schedules.
  • Facilitate owner workshops and stakeholder meetings.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Manage project risks and maintain quality standards.
Team Development
  • Mentor engineers and designers.
  • Support recruiting and onboarding initiatives.
  • Help establish engineering standards and best practices.
  • Foster a culture of accountability and technical excellence.
Client Engagement
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships.
  • Support proposal development and interview efforts.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor throughout project delivery.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or architectural engineering.
  • 12+ years of experience in Building design, performing design functions as outlined above for Texas Kansas and Colorado locations.
  • PE license is a plus. (For individuals looking for more Sr/Lead roles, must have licensure).
  • Experience with HVAC systems including chilled water, dehumidification, hydronic heating, steam, and gas piping. Technical expertise in tthe following areas highly designers: Cental Utility plants, Chilled and Heating Water systems, Medical Gas Systems, Critical environment design, Lab HVAC, Energy Modeling, Building Automation Systems, Life Cycle Cost Analysis Energy Modeling, UFC Criteria
  • Proficient in HVAC load modeling, psychrometric analysis, ductwork and pipe sizing. Technically astute with HVAC Codes and Standards (ASHRAE, NFPA, SMACNA, FGI)
  • Must have experience using building modeling software such as Trane Trace 700 or Carrier HAP.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems in high-reliability environments (e.g., N+1, 2N redundancy, cleanroom standards, radiation shielding).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and design documentation tools.
  • Skilled in reading and developing design drawings and writing specifications.
  • High degree of self-motivation with experience leading and inspiring others.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience leading teams and projects, which includes budget/schedule/scope management is required for more Senior Engineers.
