Job summary

GFT, located in New York, NY, seeks a Sr. Mechanical Engineer to lead mechanical designs for diverse markets, ensuring energy efficiency and code compliance across HVAC, plumbing, and BAS projects.

Ideal candidates hold a BS in Mechanical Engineering (ABET) with a P.E., 10+ years of independent HVAC design experience, and 5+ years in energy modeling. Strong coordination with CAD, electrical, and architectural teams is essential.

Qualifications

  • ABET-accredited BS or higher in Mechanical Engineering.
  • P.E. required.
  • 10+ years' experience independently designing HVAC systems for renovated and new facilities.
  • 5+ years' energy modeling experience with heat load software.
  • Strong understanding of psychrometrics.
  • Thorough understanding of mechanical building and energy codes.
  • Strong knowledge of DDC controls and controls design.

What You Will Do:

GFT is seeking a Sr. Mechanical Engineer with a strong interest in mechanical systems to lead mechanical designs. Market sector concentrations may include K-12 and Higher Education, Federal, Aviation, Food and Beverage, and Transportation. This position is located in New York, NY.

What you'll be challenged to do:

The successful candidate will be given all the necessary tools, software, and training to make the working experience productive, fulfilling, and unconstrained. Your ability to support and enhance our department's collective ability to conceptualize and deliver mechanical designs aligning with our clients' construction budgets, energy needs, and maintenance programs will be the key to your success at GFT.

The success of our multidisciplinary project teams depends on effective communication with an emphasis on interdisciplinary coordination. Our mechanical work requires extensive coordination with Architectural, Structural, Electrical, Building Controls, and Energy Management Systems specialists, as well as supply chain representatives. The large number of personnel involved provides a stimulating working environment that requires excellent verbal and written communication skills.

In this capacity, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:
  • Survey and studies of building mechanical equipment and systems.
  • Design of HVAC systems, building automation systems, and plumbing.
  • Technical direction of mechanical designers and technicians on specific projects.
  • Progress and other report writing.
  • Project specification writing.
  • Project management.
  • Proactive problem identification and resolution.
  • Coordination and verification of project deliverables.
  • Participation in business development meetings with prospective clients, proposal preparation and delivery, and general client interaction.
Education | Experience:
  • A BS or higher degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required.
  • P.E. is required.
  • Must have 10+ years' experience and the ability to independently design the following HVAC systems for both renovated and new facilities: Hydronic and steam boiler plants, chiller plants, terminal unit systems, distribution systems, and control systems.
  • Must have 5+ years' experience using energy modeling and heat load software to perform effective energy use analyses and heat load calculations.
  • Must have strong understanding and working knowledge of psychometrics.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of mechanical building codes, energy codes, and construction standards.
  • Must have a strong understanding of DDC controls, controls design, and operation.
  • Must command excellent verbal and written communication skills.
What we prefer you bring:
  • Project Management experience is preferred.
  • REVIT Experience with Architectural/MEP Packages and BIM360 is preferred.
  • Plumbing experience is preferred.
Compensation:

The salary range for this role is $150,000 - $190,000. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
