Job description
Job Title: Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Elgin, IL area
Job Type and Duration: Direct Hire
Pay rate: 80-110/k

Description:

Design, specification and testing of automated modified atmosphere packaging machines and systems involving flexible film tracking, heat sealing technologies, conveying systems, product handling and scale systems. Plans, directs, coordinates and at times performs activities involved in fabrication, operation, application, installation, and repair of mechanical or electromechanical systems. Experienced in a dual development and production environment.


Responsibilities:
  1. Perform mechanical design and engineering work on new products, special products, proposals and customer orders as assigned by supervisor; provide work direction to mechanical designer/drafters as appropriate.
  2. Oversee project from design concepts to prototype and production.
  3. Strong knowledge of Solidworks for design and data storage and management.
  4. Understanding MRP systems for BOM creation.
  5. Perform engineering calculations (mass and energy balance, load, strength, etc.) as required to complete assigned tasks.
  6. Determine and specify mechanical components, materials, instrument requirements, special instructions and manual content for new product design projects and customer orders ensuring the proper preparation and accuracy of all design documentation.
  7. Perform regular quality and design conformance inspections on work-in-process on manufacturing floor. Initiate action and assist providing technical direction to resolve product configuration and/or performance discrepancies.
  8. Proactively research technologies to best enhance product quality and performance.
  9. Utilize software such as Excel to manage projects, create macros and other formulas to streamline processes.
  10. Works well within a team environment but can also be self-directed when required.
  11. Participate in other special projects as assigned supporting department activities, overall goals and objectives.

Requirements:
  1. Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  2. 7-10 years of related mechanical design experience within high speed automation and packaging preferred.
  3. Proficient in the use of CAD software for design documentation utilizing SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD or similar system.
  4. Strong ability to lead projects and meet strict deadlines.
  5. Extensive knowledge of manufacturing processes for fabricating parts and component selection for the meat products and food industries.
  6. Experience in food packaging, wash down requirements, line integration, and scaling systems, specific experience in the flexible packaging or packaging industry a plus.
  7. Good organization, communication, analytical and project management skills. Good verbal and written skills utilizing office software (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  8. Advanced knowledge of Excel to create macros and other formulas.
  9. Valid driver's license and ability to travel, up to 10%, including internationally- mainly Canada.

Compensation will be commensurate with experience and will include a competitive salary and bonus program, as well as a full benefit and health care package. A relocation package will be offered if appropriate.
