Job summary

Macy's is seeking a Senior Manager of User Experience Design to lead strategic UX across web and native platforms. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required.
  • 3+ years of management experience leading teams.
  • 7+ years of experience in web, native mobile, product, graphic, interaction, content, and/or information design.

Job Overview

The Senior Manager, User Experience Design provides strategic leadership that guides and influences how teams create new experiences, leverage shared capabilities, and explore innovative solutions to scale omnichannel experiences across Macy's and Bloomingdale's digital platforms. They lead and collaborate with designers, content strategists, and UX researchers to unify and evolve digital products, while partnering closely with product and engineering teams to deliver high-quality experiences across web and native platforms. They shape the future of the customer journey by envisioning, delivering, and continuously enhancing shopping experiences that create seamless, cross-brand interactions at every touchpoint.

What You Will Do
  • Influence and help define the strategic roadmap for Macy's shopping journey products.
  • Contribute to a compelling customer experience vision, strategy, and success metrics for key initiatives.
  • Apply systems thinking to complex challenges while identifying and addressing specific design opportunities.
  • Champion the adoption, evolution, and effective use of design systems.
  • Conduct industry and competitive analysis to identify emerging market, customer, and design trends.
  • Translate business challenges into user experience opportunities by designing, testing, and launching usable, valuable, and engaging solutions.
  • Partner with the User Research team to plan and conduct customer research that informs product and design decisions.
  • Mentor teams on synthesizing customer insights and navigating complex problem spaces.
  • Develop compelling communications that leverage storytelling and persuasion to build trust, influence decisions, and strengthen long-term partnerships.
  • Recruit, develop, and lead high-performing teams by setting clear goals, defining career paths, and creating growth opportunities.
  • Foster an inclusive, innovative, candid, and trust-based team culture.
  • Promote collaboration across teams and throughout the broader Experience Design organization.
  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships, and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities.
  • In addition to the essential duties mentioned above, other duties may be assigned.
Skills You Will Need

User Experience Strategy & Vision: Ability to define and influence long-term experience strategies, customer experience roadmaps, and success metrics that align user needs with business objectives across omnichannel platforms.

UX Design Leadership: Deep expertise in user-centered design principles, interaction design, information architecture, and digital product design, with the ability to guide teams through complex design challenges and deliver innovative customer experiences.

Systems Thinking & Design Systems: Ability to approach challenges holistically, identify opportunities across interconnected experiences, and champion the adoption, governance, and evolution of scalable design systems.

Customer Research & Insight Generation: Ability to partner with research teams to uncover customer needs, synthesize qualitative and quantitative insights, and translate findings into actionable design and business recommendations.

Cross-Functional Leadership & Influence: Ability to build strong partnerships with Product, Engineering, Research, and Business stakeholders to align priorities, influence decision-making, and drive customer-centric outcomes.

Strategic Problem Solving: Ability to navigate ambiguity, simplify complex systems, identify root causes, and develop innovative solutions that balance customer needs, technical considerations, and business objectives.

Communication & Storytelling: Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills with the ability to communicate vision, build alignment, persuade stakeholders, and advocate for design-driven solutions across all levels of the organization.

People Leadership & Talent Development: Proven ability to recruit, coach, mentor, and develop high-performing teams while creating clear growth paths, fostering engagement, and enabling individuals to do their best work.

Digital Product & Omnichannel Design Expertise: Strong knowledge of responsive web, native mobile, and digital commerce experiences, with the ability to create seamless customer journeys across channels and touchpoints.

Change Agility & Innovation: Ability to anticipate trends, evaluate emerging technologies, challenge existing approaches, and foster a culture of innovation, experimentation, and continuous improvement.

Who You Are
  • Candidates with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply.
  • 3-plus years of management experience, hiring, developing, and leading teams, and positively inspiring others to do their best work. 7+ years of experience in web, native mobile, product, graphic, interaction, content, and/or information design.
  • This role involves performing essential job functions such as communication, collaboration, and use of office and computer systems. Responsibilities include the ability to access and review written and electronic information, and to move within the work environment and interact with workplace materials as needed to carry out job responsibilities.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
