Sr. Manager, Global Cost Accounting
What You Will Do

In this vital role you will join Amgen’s mission: To Serve Patients. Our Global Accounting team is made up of a diverse and highly skilled group of professionals who are passionate about Amgen’s mission of serving patients. Teams are located in North America, South America, Europe, and Asia‑Pacific, with external business partner support in India. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Team Leadership and Organizational Strategy
    • Supervise a team of 3+ Amgen or contract staff in day‑to‑day accounting operations to deliver on accounting close and reporting activities related to inventory, site support, COS, reserves, standard costing, pre‑approval inventory for Amgen’s manufacturing network, and to ensure US GAAP compliance.
    • Develop the team by providing coaching and guidance, building subject‑matter expertise, and fostering a continuous process improvement mindset.
    • Manage roles and responsibilities within the team to balance workload and prioritize based on available resources.
    • Participate in organizational strategy and succession planning discussions.
  • Analysis and Interpretation – Accounting and Financial Reports
    • Implement processes to identify and provide timely guidance on Generally Accepted Accounting Principles by partnering with Technical Accounting and External Auditors.
    • Review and validate variance analysis prepared by the team for movements of Balance Sheet, Income Statement, and Cash Flow statements.
    • Establish efficient processes to draft and review footnote disclosures and review detailed support for external reporting deliverables (10Q/10K).
  • Business Partnering (FP&A, Sites, Operations, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain)
    • Develop strategic relationships with Finance and Operational team leaders to coordinate the successful execution of Month‑End close activities.
    • Provide leadership support to initiatives or projects by offering accounting guidance and identifying risks to internal controls.
    • Identify and escalate concerns or issues that impact the accounting close process and financial reporting.
  • Internal Controls and Compliance Process Support
    • Partner with Internal Controls to execute and review Sarbanes‑Oxley (SOX) certification and other control verification processes.
    • Support Internal, External, and Tax audits by identifying required resources and ensuring timely and accurate submission of responses.
    • Ensure tax compliance and statutory financial requirements are adhered to and related government transactions are executed accurately.
    • Interpret policies and procedures to provide guidance on proper application.
  • Process Improvement, Automation, and Project Management
    • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities for a more efficient accounting close process.
    • Deploy automation and reporting solutions (e.g., AI tools, UiPath, Automation Anywhere, Anaplan, Tableau, Alteryx, MS Teams, Smartsheet, DocuSign) to reduce transactional work.
    • Manage special projects that require Global Accounting representation, including company expansion, acquisitions, divestitures, and financial system implementations.
  • Vendor Services Management
    • Engage with leadership of the external services vendor supporting accounting operations to monitor activities and address issues promptly.
    • Participate in governance meetings to discuss activity status, project progress, and issue resolution.
    • Monitor service‑level metrics and manage expectations and deliverables, providing timely feedback on external personnel performance.
What We Expect Of You

The professional we seek has the following qualifications.

Basic Qualifications
  • Doctorate degree and 2 years of accounting, audit, or financial reporting experience
  • Master’s degree and 6 years of accounting, audit, or financial reporting experience
  • Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of accounting, audit, or financial reporting experience
  • Associate’s degree and 10 years of accounting, audit, or financial reporting experience
  • High school diploma / GED and 12 years of accounting, audit, or financial reporting experience

In addition to meeting at least one of the above requirements, you must have a minimum of 3 years of direct people‑management experience (leading teams, projects, programs, or resource allocation).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Comprehensive accounting knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate across functions and locations
  • Detail oriented with strong analytical, problem‑solving, management, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently, multi‑task, and establish priorities
  • Positive attitude and strong work ethic
  • Initiative and capability to operate with minimal direction in a fast‑paced environment
  • Strong project management and leadership skills
  • Experience with SAP, S4 HANA, BW, Hyperion, EDW applications
  • Experience implementing automation initiatives
  • Experience managing an outsource partner team
