Job description

Position

Senior Geotechnical Engineer – responsible for leading technical oversight on a $3–$5 billion infrastructure project, ensuring compliance with transportation standards across design, construction, and field operations.

Core Responsibilities
  1. Geotechnical support to design
    • Review design submittals (plans, reports, calculations) for compliance with standards.
    • Comment on shop drawings and geotechnical elements to support constructability.
    • Identify risks or gaps early in design and evaluate cost‑saving initiatives.
  2. Construction support & field oversight
    • Provide field support during geotechnical installation.
    • Assist CEI staff with plan and spec interpretation.
    • Participate in pre‑construction meetings and observe field activities to identify non‑conformance.
  3. Testing, evaluation & documentation
    • Coordinate and review geotechnical testing activities.
    • Review foundation logs, installation records, and certification packages.
    • Evaluate test results and recommend foundation performance improvements.
  4. Quality assurance & issue resolution
    • Support QA efforts through field reviews, documentation checks, and CEI coordination.
    • Resolve construction geotechnical issues and recommend corrective actions.
    • Provide technical input on geotechnical claims or disputes.
  5. Coordination & program support
    • Coordinate with subconsultants, testing firms, and laboratories.
    • Interface with client Materials Office and project stakeholders.
    • Support consistent communication across development, construction, and materials teams.
Key Outputs
  • Clear, actionable geotechnical review comments.
  • Evaluated test results with supporting recommendations.
  • Field observations and QA documentation.
  • Timely technical input that supports design development and construction progress, reducing risk.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum 10 years of geotechnical engineering experience.
  • Working knowledge of geotechnical principles, foundation systems, and soil behavior.
  • Familiarity with FDOT standards, specifications, and testing procedures.
  • Ability to interpret construction documents and technical data.
  • Strong communication and coordination skills in a field environment.
  • Independent work capability while supporting a broader team.
  • Practical problem‑solving mindset focused on constructability and risk reduction.
  • Field‑based role with frequent travel across project sites.
Required Qualifications
  • 10 years of experience.
  • Professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position (e.g., PE or P.Eng).
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, GIS, and CAD/CADD as appropriate.
  • Experience with GeoStudio/Ensoft, Bentley suite (gINT/OpenGround/LeapFrog), and advanced numerical modeling software (PLAXIS, Itasca FLAC).
