Job summary

Kiewit is seeking a Sr. Civil Estimator for the Kansas City area to lead self-performed civil infrastructure estimates across design/build, design/bid/build and EPC projects.

You will work with preconstruction and construction teams to plan, develop and refine estimates for heavy civil scopes including grading, drainage, utilities and bridges. The role requires 5+ years in civil estimating for EPC/heavy civil projects, with a track record in leading estimates and mentoring teams.

Qualifications

• BS in engineering, construction, estimating or similar field; 5+ years' related estimating infrastructure experience preferred
• Experience leading estimates or small teams and mentoring required at this level
• Strong attention to detail, communication, interpersonal and leadership skills
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and estimating tools; eager to learn InEight

Responsibilities

• Develop and lead complete estimates and quantity takeoffs for self-performed civil construction scopes (Heavy Civil, Highway, Bridge, Rail/Transit, Utilities, Drainage, Aviation) for design/build, design/bid/build and EPC projects
• Review plans and specs to understand project requirements and prepare cost estimates
• Lead subcontractor/vendor selection and coordinate with project managers and engineers
• Conduct site investigations and participate in constructability reviews to ensure estimate accuracy
• Communicate with stakeholders to align expectations, phasing and scheduling within the estimate
• Assist in preparing proposals and bid documentation; stay current with industry trends and technologies
• Be proficient with InEight Estimate and other estimating tools
• May lead small estimating teams and project estimates

Estimating is not a back-office function at Kiewit -its a core business driver! Estimating determines how we work, how we plan work and protects the company from necessary risk! District Overview

Kiewit’s Central District is one of our largest infrastructure districts specializing in heavy civil, structural concrete/bridge, water/wastewater, and transportation projects. We self-perform work such as mass grading, drainage, paving, underground piping, underground utility infrastructure, and more - so be ready to get your hands dirty! While headquartered in Denver, Colorado, the majority of our work is concentrated in the Central and South-Central regions of the United States. We are looking for people committed to the construction industry rather than design.

Location

This position will be located for the Kansas City metro area, in our Lenexa Kansas Area office.

Responsibilities

• Develop and lead complete estimates and quantity/material takeoffs for self-performed civil construction scopes of work for design/build, design/bid/build and EPC projects for ground up infrastructure projects (Heavy Civil, Highway, Bridge, Rail/Transit, Utilities, Drainage, Aviation and Infrastructure portions of power plants)
• Review owner plans and specifications to develop a comprehensive understanding of the project; develop plan for the actual construction to serve as basis for the estimate.
• Review and assist with proposals and other documentation to prepare cost estimates. Review all bid and contract documents and home office legal department opinions.
• Conduct site investigation prior to forming a plan of operations to identify any problems or conditions of an unusual nature that may be present.
• Participate in constructability reviews, Collaborate with project managers, design engineers, superintendents, clients and other Kiewit districts to align expectations, phasing and scheduling of the work to ensure accuracy within the estimate.
• Stay abreast of trends and developments, such as new equipment, methods and procedures that are developing in the industry.
• Become proficient in Kiewit’s estimating program, “InEight Estimate”.
• Provide leadership and strategy in subcontractor and vendor selection process; May lead small estimating teams and lead estimates for projects.
• Prepare special engineering studies or reports required by certain bid items or conditions. Consult with clients/owners on various problems discovered during bid preparation, design/construction schedule changes, to ensure estimate stays on track.

Qualifications

• BS in engineering, construction, estimating or similar field, and a minimum of 5+ years' related estimating infrastructure experience. Ideal candidate has demonstrated experience with estimating infrastructure self-performed construction projects (civil, earthwork, drainage, structural/bridge, grading, concrete, form-work, asphalt, underground utilities). If no degree, a minimum of 10+ years experience combined in Estimating, Field Construction/Superintendent experience required
• Experience leading estimates and small estimating teams, providing coaching/mentoring is required at this level
• Exceptionally strong attention to detail, communication, interpersonal and leadership skills
• Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office products (e.g. Excel, Work, Outlook, PowerPoint) and proficient with various estimating tools and eager to learn "InEight"
• Ability to perform estimating duties as outlined above, ability to consult with stakeholders in bid preparation, and interface with clients and perform preconstruction functions.
• Ability to go to site locations as required for walkdowns, and other estimating related functions
