Job summary

Corning Inc. is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to design and develop mechanical systems transitioning R&D concepts into scalable automation and production-ready equipment.

You will create robust mechanisms, assemblies, and tooling for high-volume manufacturing, applying DFMA and GD&T while collaborating with cross-functional teams. The role requires 5+ years of design experience, proficiency in major CAD tools (SolidWorks, Creo, NX, Inventor), and travel up to 50% domestically.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field required.
  • 5+ years of mechanical design experience in manufacturing, automation, or capital equipment environments.
  • Experience designing mechanisms, structural assemblies, and precision components for production use.
  • Experience supporting technology transfer, NPI, and production scale-up.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD and drawing tools listed (SolidWorks, Creo, NX, Inventor).
  • Experience cross-functional with engineering, manufacturing, quality teams.
  • Willingness to travel up to 50% domestically; occasional international travel.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience; advanced degree may substitute for some experience.
  • MS or PhD preferred in related fields.
  • Strong GD&T, tolerance analysis, DFMA, FMEA, FEA, and design validation experience.
  • Background in industrial automation and high-throughput equipment.
  • Experience with Windchill/Teamcenter/Enovia and Lean methodologies.

Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical components, assemblies, automation systems, tooling, fixtures, and custom equipment for advanced manufacturing.
  • Apply DFM/DFA/DFMA to develop robust, cost-effective designs.
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to deliver production-ready solutions.
  • Support technology transfer, pilot builds, NPI, and manufacturing deployment.
  • Perform tolerance analysis, GD&T, and select materials for parts and assemblies.
  • Manage design docs, BOMs, revisions, and ECO/ECR in PLM systems.
  • Assist with troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and design validation.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and contract manufacturers for manufacturability and qualification.

Role Purpose

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer designs and develops mechanical systems that transition advanced technologies from R&D into scalable, production-ready manufacturing. This role converts early-stage concepts into robust mechanical designs for automation systems, tooling, fixtures, custom equipment, and precision assemblies, supporting the full design lifecycle from concept through pilot, NPI, technology transfer, and manufacturing deployment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design mechanical components, assemblies, automation systems, tooling, fixtures, and custom equipment for advanced manufacturing applications
  • Apply DFM/DFA principles to develop robust, serviceable, cost-effective, and scalable designs
  • Partner with mechanical, process, controls, manufacturing, and quality teams to deliver integrated production-ready solutions
  • Support technology transfer, pilot builds, NPI, and production scale-up from R&D into manufacturing
  • Perform tolerance stack-up analysis, apply GD&T, and select appropriate materials for machined parts, sheet metal, weldments, and precision assemblies
  • Manage design documentation, BOMs, revisions, and ECO/ECR processes within PDM/PLM systems
  • Support troubleshooting, root cause analysis, design validation, and continuous improvement as systems are deployed and optimized
  • Partner with suppliers, machine shops, contract manufacturers, and integrators to support manufacturability, cost, and supplier qualification activities
Experiences/Education - Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field
  • 5+ years of mechanical design experience in manufacturing, automation, industrial equipment, or capital equipment environments
  • Experience designing mechanisms, structural assemblies, and precision components intended for production use
  • Experience supporting technology transfer, NPI, production scale-up, and production readiness from R&D or pilot environments
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD and detailed drawing tools such as SolidWorks, Creo, Siemens NX, Autodesk Inventor, or equivalent
  • Experience working cross-functionally with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams
  • Experience managing design documentation in PDM/PLM systems and through ECO/ECR change processes
  • Ability to travel up to 50% domestically, with occasional international travel
  • 8+ years of relevant experience; advanced degree may be considered in lieu of some experience
  • MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field
  • Strong experience with GD&T, tolerance analysis, DFM/DFA/DFMA, FMEA, FEA, and design validation processes
  • Background in industrial automation, motion control, mechatronics, pneumatic/hydraulic systems, or high-throughput manufacturing equipment
  • Experience with PDM/PLM platforms such as Windchill, Teamcenter, or Enovia
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, Kaizen, Six Sigma, and structured NPI processes

The range for this position is$83,134.00-$114,310.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
