Job summary

Con Edison is seeking a Senior Electrical Systems Engineer to support design, operation, maintenance, testing, and analysis of electrical systems in power generation facilities. The role covers transformers, generators, switchgear, power cables up to 69 kV, motors, MCCs, buswork, and related equipment, with emphasis on sizing, protection schemes, UPS, and lifecycle management.

The candidate will ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, industry standards, and company procedures

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering with 8 years of relevant experience, or a Master's in Engineering with 6 years of experience in design, analysis, and modification of industrial systems.
• Experience in electric and steam power plants or substations.
• Strong communication, leadership, and customer service orientation.
• Ability to manage multiple assignments, work independently and in teams, and deliver high-quality results.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and strong organizational skills.

• Participate in project planning, outages, and construction processes.
• Generate or review acceptance test plans and oversee testing/commissioning.
• Interface with equipment and service providers and generate detailed reports for capital planning.

Job description

Overview

Steam Plant Systems Engineering seeks a Senior Electrical Systems Engineer to support the design, operation, maintenance, testing, and analysis of electric systems within power generation facilities. This role requires strong technical expertise in plant electrical systems and a demonstrated ability to support safe, reliable, and efficient operations in accordance with company standards and regulatory requirements. The position involves engineering responsibility for transformers (up to 120,000 kVA), generators (up to 230,000 kVA), switchgear, breakers, power cables (up to 69 kV), motors, MCCs, power panels, buswork, and related transmission and distribution equipment. The successful candidate will apply working knowledge of equipment sizing, system analysis, protection schemes, UPS systems, dielectric fluids, and lifecycle management practices, while ensuring compliance with applicable state and federal regulations, industry standards, process safety requirements, and company and industry codes, procedures, and specifications.

This position does not provide employment pursuant to the terms of a STEM OPT Training Plan.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and 8 years of engineering work experience focused on the design, analysis, and modification of industrial systems. or
• Master's Degree in Engineering and 6 years of engineering work experience focused on the design, analysis, and modification of industrial systems.

Licenses and Certifications

• Professional Engineer (PE) Preferred

Physical Demands

• Ability to respond to system emergencies
• Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
• Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations
• Ability to climb ladders and stairs
• Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
• Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
• Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator, without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
• Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
• Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses

Additional Physical Demands

• The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Ability to participate in sequence engineering program (which includes working nights, weekends, and an on-call schedule).
• Ability to climb into steam structures, such as boilers.
• Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needs arise.
