Job description

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer with strong backend development expertise and a deep proficiency in Microsoft SQL Server/SQL. This role will design, develop, and support scalable enterprise systems while considering upstream and downstream integrations, system architecture, performance, and long-term business objectives.

The ideal candidate will have experience owning complex technical initiatives that span multiple weeks or months and involve multiple engineers. They will be expected to make sound technical decisions, influence priorities and tradeoffs, lead design reviews, and break complex work into actionable tasks for other engineers. This individual must be highly self-sufficient, comfortable working through technical details, and able to effectively communicate and coordinate across cross-functional teams.

While MS SQL/backend development is the primary technical focus, experience with Java/Spring Boot, AWS, Kubernetes/Docker, Kafka, microservices, CI/CD, and modern infrastructure practices is highly valued.

This is a hybrid role based in Seattle, WA.

Onsite presence of 4 days per week is expected.

Work Schedule: 9:00 AM -5:00 PM Pacific

Responsibilities

• Design and develop enterprise-level backend systems with consideration for upstream and downstream integrations.
• Develop, optimize, and maintain complex Microsoft SQL Server/SQL solutions, including queries, stored procedures, database design, and performance optimization.
• Own technical designs and initiatives that span multiple engineers, teams, systems, and extended delivery timelines.
• Make technical decisions and influence priorities, scope, and tradeoffs to support short- and long-term business objectives.
• Break complex initiatives into actionable tasks and provide technical direction and support to other engineers.
• Lead technical design discussions, architecture reviews, and engineering work processes.
• Evaluate system architecture, dependencies, scalability, performance, networking, and integration considerations.
• Design and develop scalable services and APIs using Java and Spring Boot.
• Build and support microservices and RESTful architectures.
• Identify technical gaps, risks, performance concerns, and future system needs and proactively develop solutions.
• Collaborate with engineering, product, architecture, operations, and other cross-functional teams to deliver solutions.
• Adapt engineering processes and development practices to meet project and team requirements.
• Implement and support automated testing across unit, integration, regression, and load testing.
• Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure automation, observability, logging, and metrics.
• Work with messaging technologies and distributed systems such as Kafka and SQS.
• Support cloud-based solutions, particularly within AWS.
• Provide technical guidance to less-experienced engineers and help drive successful execution of team initiatives.
• Take ownership when design or business requirements change, evaluating impacts and coordinating implementation across stakeholders.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience delivering high-quality software, ideally across the full development stack.
• Strong Microsoft SQL Server/SQL development experience is required, including complex queries, stored procedures, database design, optimization, and performance tuning.
• Strong proficiency in an object-oriented programming language, preferably Java.
• Experience with Java and Spring Boot.
• Experience with Kubernetes and/or Docker and containerized applications.
• Experience with RESTful APIs and microservices architecture.
• Strong understanding of system design, architecture, scalability, reliability, and performance testing.
• Experience building backend services and distributed systems.
• Experience with AWS and cloud technologies.
• Experience working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL in addition to MS SQL.
• Understanding of cache-based, low-latency system design.
• Experience with CI/CD, preferably GitLab CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform.
• Experience with automated testing at the unit, integration, regression, and load levels.
• Experience with messaging technologies and patterns, including Kafka and/or SQS.
• Familiarity with observability, logging, and metrics tools such as New Relic and Splunk.
• Strong understanding of computer science fundamentals and software engineering best practices.
• Ability to understand architecture, systems, networking, integrations, and downstream impacts across a broader technology environment.
• Demonstrated experience leading technical initiatives, design reviews, or engineering processes involving multiple contributors.
• Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
• Highly self-sufficient and accountable, with the ability to work through technical details, execute independently, communicate design changes, and help guide others through implementation.
