Sr. Energy Storage Engineer
The Energy Storage Engineer is responsible for supporting the planning, design, engineering, and execution of utility-scale energy storage projects from development through completion. This role provides technical expertise across project phases, including scope development, engineering oversight, equipment integration, design review, and cross-functional collaboration.
The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise in energy storage and renewable energy systems with effective project management and communication skills. This individual will work closely with engineering, project management, procurement, construction, suppliers, and other stakeholders to deliver safe, reliable, efficient, and best-in-class energy storage projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the design and engineering of utility-scale energy storage projects, including major system components and associated electrical infrastructure.
- Review engineering drawings, studies, specifications, and design packages to identify inconsistencies, errors, and opportunities to improve design quality, efficiency, and constructability.
- Identify and resolve engineering issues and provide recommendations to improve project design and future project execution.
- Develop and review technical scopes of work, specifications, and contract requirements for engineering and equipment procurement.
- Support projects from initial development through construction and completion, working closely with Project Managers and cross-functional teams.
- Provide technical leadership and influence project teams on engineering decisions, design requirements, and technical solutions.
- Monitor project progress, technical issues, engineering deliverables, milestones, and potential project risks.
- Collaborate with equipment suppliers, manufacturers, EPC contractors, and engineering partners to support the integration of major equipment and systems.
- Work across multidisciplinary teams to resolve technical challenges, improve project opportunities, and effectively integrate energy storage systems, electrical equipment, and controls.
- Support the development and review of major equipment specifications and procurement requirements, ensuring technical requirements are clearly defined and communicated.
- Evaluate permitting requirements and work with appropriate stakeholders to address technical challenges and recommend site and system design improvements.
- Provide technical support during equipment procurement, construction, commissioning, and project execution as required.
- Travel to project sites and other locations as required to support project-specific engineering and execution activities.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Experience & Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in Solar/PV engineering, energy storage, electrical engineering, construction, or a related field.
- Experience with utility-scale renewable energy or Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) preferred.
- Technical expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Battery energy storage system design
- Working knowledge of energy storage technologies, including battery chemistries, Power Conversion Systems (PCS), and DC/DC converters.
- Familiarity with lithium-ion battery safety standards and applicable codes, including:
- UL 1973
- UL 9540
- UL 9540A
- NFPA 855
- NFPA 70E
- NEC
- Applicable IFC/IBC requirements
- Familiarity with applicable PV standards, including IEC 61215, IEC 61646, and IEC 61730.
- Ability to independently manage specialized technical assignments and make sound engineering recommendations.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and project management skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate technical information to engineering, project management, suppliers, contractors, and senior stakeholders.
- Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional, fast-paced project environment.
