Sr. Electrical Protection & Control Engineer

ECF Engineering Consultants is a full-service engineering firm that specializes in providing technical solutions to the Energy Markets, as well as to the public and private sectors, requiring electrical and mechanical engineering support.

We serve those entities across an array of projects, offering consultation on technology utilization, design solutions for electrical and mechanical systems, public health systems, and equipment procurement and construction-phase services.

Our office locations include Atlanta, GA; Fort Lauderdale, FL; and West Palm Beach, FL (corporate).

Description:

Perform a senior role in substation design, preparing specifications, administrative functions, or field engineering related to assigned engineering projects under the guidance of the immediate supervisor or another designated professional engineer. The individual must be proficient in using various power system design software tools necessary for executing design and engineering tasks for electrical utility substation facilities, protection, and control system engineering. Additionally, the individual must grasp both basic and complex issues related to substation structures, components, cable and conduit systems, grounding systems, shielding system methodologies, terminologies, and techniques needed to develop construction documentation for the assigned project. Previous work experience with our client, Georgia Transmission Company (GTC), or Southern Companies is preferred.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Preliminary design and budgetary estimate.
  • Detailed design and estimates.
  • Equipment specification proposal evaluation and requisitioning.
  • Monitor the project construction activities to ensure compliance with plans and specifications. Act as Resident Engineer on projects of any magnitude. Interpret complex plans and specifications and apply available information to satisfy all project design requirements. Maintain familiarity with appropriate engineering and construction codes and ensure compliance with all codes. Prepare and/or monitor construction schedules to ensure timely completion of the work. Institute and direct changes to the work when required by differing site conditions. Conduct on-site design or investigation work to ensure the adequacy of methods. Receive, evaluate, and approve contractors’ invoices. Receive and inspect equipment to be installed on the project and approve for payment. Prepare reports and feasibility studies for management submission.
  • Serve as a project engineer or project manager on assigned projects.
  • Promote efficient flow of information and ensure complete and accurate record keeping.
  • Be familiar with the Client/Company’s drawing system, design and construction standards, and applicable industry codes and practices.
  • Able to design or apply various substation protection schemes under the direction of the incumbent's supervisor.
  • Ability to develop proposals that include the scope of work that details the established goals and objectives, and clearly defines the deliverables and work schedule.
  • Conduct on-site design or investigation work to ensure the adequacy of the contractor’s methods.
  • Perform detailed design of one-line diagrams, elementary and wiring diagrams, and SCADA communications.
  • Provide direct supervision to staff designers.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems preferred) or in a related field from an accredited university.
  • Previous work experience with our client, Georgia Transmission Company (GTC), or Southern Companies is preferred.
  • Professional engineering license required.
  • 7 - 10 years of experience in engineering of related projects.
  • Strong understanding and knowledge of industry and national codes and standards, including but not limited to NESC and NFPA 70 (NEC), IEEE standards, and other applicable standards on substation design.
  • Experience with system design software, CADD, and Microsoft Office products is required.
  • Strong analytical and management skills.
  • Experience with ground grid design of substations.
  • Experience with power systems software packages such as Cape, Aspen One-liner, CDEGS, Wing IS, SKM, ETAP, BESS, and others is strongly desired.
  • Willingness to travel for site surveys, project scope walks, and meetings.
