Senior Electrical Engineer
Job Purpose
The Senior Electrical Engineer provides on-site sustaining engineering for Automatic Test Equipment (ATE), Test Program Sets (TPS), test fixtures, and associated Support Equipment (SE). The role covers hardware design, integration, troubleshooting, technical data, qualification support, and engineering analysis that keep ATE test systems reliable, maintainable, and supportable through obsolescence, upgrades, and TPS re-host. Develop and support fielded automated test equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Design, develop, update, and sustain ATE, test fixtures, and SE used for repair of electronics, instruments, ground support equipment, and avionics systems
- Perform hardware design (electrical and mechanical interfaces), circuit design and layout, component selection based on specifications and reliability, and interface definition between testers and units under test
- Support TPS development, re-host, maintenance, and software/hardware integration for automated test systems
- Conduct requirements analysis, trade studies, technology-insertion evaluations, modification studies, and root-cause analysis on fielded test systems
- Support obsolescence and Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortage (DMSMS) research and recommended engineering solutions
- Plan, organize, and participate in qualification and verification activities, including System Compatibility Tests (SCT), Engineering Evaluation Tests (EET), Verification and Validation (V&V), first-article hardware/software tests, acceptance testing, and Functional/Physical Configuration Audits (FCA/PCA)
- Support preliminary and critical design reviews, formal qualification testing, and related design-review activities
- Develop and review technical specifications, system/engineering drawings, test plans and procedures, test reports, engineering management plans, Technical Orders, and other technical data packages needed to sustain maintenance and repair
- Identify, review, and recommend updates to technical orders and procedures affected by software or hardware changes
- Perform technical investigations and repairs of failing systems spanning analog, digital, RF, electromechanical, and mechanical domains (e.g., avionics, sensors, power, and related SE)
- Support cost/benefit, life-cycle cost, risk, reliability, and maintainability analyses and provide engineering recommendations
- Document progress, findings, and recommendations in the engineering project tracking system; support Technical Interchange Meetings and Program Management Reviews
- Assist with regression testing and sustainment of software documentation and hardware upgrades (corrective, adaptive, and performance-improvement work within existing specifications)
- Serve as on-site engineering support for assigned test systems; coordinate technically with responsible stakeholders
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or an equivalent engineering degree
- Minimum 10 years of applicable electrical engineering experience performing trade studies, requirements analysis, root-cause analysis, and hardware design in support of U.S. military aircraft systems
- Demonstrated hardware and software integration experience on automated test systems
- Ability to read electrical schematics and design electrical circuits
- Proficiency with standard electronic test instrumentation (e.g., digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, AC/DC power supplies; closed-loop servo systems a plus)
- Experience with ANSI-C or another scripting language used in automated testing
- U.S. citizenship required for installation access and performance on a U.S. Air Force Installation
- Ability to travel occasionally (reviews, conferences, vendor & sites)
Preferred / Highly Desired
- Direct experience with Automatic Test Equipment and Test Program Sets (e.g., intermediate-shop ATE architectures, bench/rack testers, TPS re-host)
- Knowledge of U.S. Air Force aviation maintenance sustainment practices
- Support Equipment development to MIL-PRF-28800, MIL-STD-810, ASME and MIL-STD-461
- NI TestStand, CVI, LabVIEW, or equivalent; PXI or equivalent modular instrumentation
- Product life-cycle management familiarity (e.g., IEEE 15288)
- Familiarity with FAR/DFARS as they apply to engineering support work
- Experience producing or revising Technical Orders and tester technical data packages
Competencies
- Engineering judgment: obsolescence, COTS instrument replacement, configuration integrity, and maintainability of aging test systems
- Clear written and verbal technical communication; accurate, timely documentation
- Ability to work as part of an Integrated Project Team environment
