Job description

JOB SUMMARY

The Sr. EHS Manager is one of two newly created manager roles reporting to the EHS Director, and is the first line manager this team of specialists has had. This role owns a team of three EHS Specialists and is accountable for shifting their day-to-day work from purely reactive incident response toward proactive auditing, training, and safety-culture building across Astro Shapes' plant locations. The Sr. EHS Manager acts as a force multiplier for the Director, taking ownership of team performance, standardization of practices across plants, and mentorship of specialists so the Director can focus on department strategy rather than daily operational coverage.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Directly supervise, coach, and develop a team of three EHS Specialists, including workload assignment, performance management, and career development.
  • Build and lead a proactive audit and inspection program across assigned plant locations, moving the department beyond incident response toward prevention.
  • Own incident and near‑miss trend analysis for the team's assigned sites, translating findings into corrective actions and process changes.
  • Design and deliver EHS training programs, and ensure training compliance is tracked and current across covered locations.
  • Standardize EHS practices, checklists, and procedures across plants and shifts to close the coverage gaps created by the department's historically thin staffing.
  • Serve as an escalation point for specialists on complex safety, environmental, or regulatory issues, and partner with plant leadership to resolve them.
  • Act as a change agent, bringing outside best practices into a department that has historically operated reactively.
  • Partner with the EHS Director and the EHS Manager to ensure consistent coverage across all shifts and locations, including backup coverage when a specialist is out.
  • Support the Director in scoping where additional specialist headcount is needed most, based on plant/shift coverage data.
  • Represent the department in cross‑functional meetings and support OSHA, EPA, and internal audit readiness for assigned sites.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises three EHS Specialists. Responsible for their onboarding, coaching, performance reviews, and day‑to‑day work direction.

QUALIFICATIONS — EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 10+ years of progressive EHS experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment, including experience across multiple sites or shifts.
  • 5+ years of direct people‑management experience, ideally managing safety or environmental specialists.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulatory requirements applicable to a multi‑plant manufacturing operation.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Demonstrated ability to build programs and processes from a reactive baseline, not just maintain existing ones.
  • Strong coaching and team‑development skills; comfortable managing people new to the workforce as well as tenured specialists.
  • Skilled at incident trend analysis and translating data into practical corrective action.
  • Confident communicator able to influence plant leadership and drive accountability without direct authority over site operations.
  • Comfortable operating with a degree of ambiguity while the department's structure and processes are being built out.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

Regular travel between plant locations is required. Work is performed in both office and manufacturing plant‑floor settings, including exposure to typical industrial conditions (noise, moving equipment, temperature variation). Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required on plant floors per site policy.
