Job summary

Matrix PDM Engineering in Houston seeks a Sr. Designer/Checker to produce precise design layouts and final drawings for complex projects. You will check drawings for accuracy, support field surveys, and assist the engineering supervisor with task coordination and training.

The role may involve leading ongoing projects with internal and external teams. Candidates should have a Bachelor's in engineering (civil/structural preferred) and 4+ years of civil design experience, with advanced AutoCAD

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related discipline, civil/structural focus preferred.
  • 4+ years of civil design and layout experience.
  • Advanced AutoCAD Civil 3D knowledge.
  • Strong drafting techniques and math/trigonometry abilities.
  • Understanding of Civil codes and standards for various work types.
  • Experience with site development, storm drainage, water and sanitary systems.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to handle multiple tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Produce design layouts and finished drawings, checking for accuracy.
  • Assist with field surveys, design sketches, and engineering support.
  • Layout and prepare drawings; perform checks for interferences and constructability.
  • Coordinate with internal/external resources and manage project tasks.
  • Support senior staff and provide guidance to drafters as needed.

Job description

The Sr. Designer/Checker is a senior-level design/drafting position, responsible for producing design layouts and finished drawings. Incumbents will be assigned to custom jobs involving, but not limited to, field survey, design sketches, engineering support, layout and final drawings, and checking of all drawings assigned to them to assure that the drawings are accurate and error-free. This role may serve as a discipline lead for projects, managing internal and external resources.

Essential Functions
  • Actively supports the Company’s commitment to safety and its “Core Values.”
  • Represents the Company at all times with high moral standards while adhering to the Company’s “Code of Business Conduct and Ethics.”
  • Assists the Engineering Supervisor in determining how to best to meet job requirements, coordinating jobs and conducting training.
  • Assists Drafters in lower classifications with questions/issues during performance of project work.
  • Cooperates with other team members; interacts with individuals at all organizational levels in professional manner.
  • Performs basic and complex layouts.
  • Produces new drawings as well as checks drawings for accuracy and completeness.
  • Performs conversions between state plane coordinates and plant coordinates.
  • Pick-up red marks from check prints and correct drawings as required.
  • Performs detailed dimensional and bill of material check of all drawings.
  • Checks entire job for interferences and constructability.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as directed.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related discipline with a focus in civil/structural design preferred, or equivalent combination of education/experience in lieu of degree.
  • 4+ years of related civil design and layout experience required.
  • Advanced AutoCAD Civil 3D knowledge required.
  • Strong understanding of drafting techniques.
  • Ability to understand and use general math and trigonometry functions.
  • General knowledge and understanding of Civil codes and standards required for different types of work.
  • Experienced in industrial site development, storm drainage collection and retention/detention systems, potable water distribution systems, sanitary collection and pumping systems, geometric road layout, permitting, site grading, and earthwork.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and thoroughness in work.
  • Demonstrates strong organizational skills and ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously under time sensitive deadlines.
  • Exhibits excellent listening, oral and written skills.
  • Occasional overtime may be required.
