Job summary

McKesson is seeking an experienced Database Administrator to design, implement, and support PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server databases across on‑premises and Azure environments. You will monitor performance, tune systems, and ensure security, backups, and high availability are in place.

The role requires 7+ years of progressive experience, cloud familiarity with Azure, and scripting proficiency in PowerShell or Python.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of progressive database administration experience in production environments.
• Strong expertise with PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server in enterprise settings.
• Experience with installation, configuration, performance tuning, security, backup/recovery, and high availability.
• Proficiency in PL/pgSQL and/or T-SQL, with query tuning focus.
• Experience in cloud-hosted databases, preferably Azure.
• Automation and scripting using PowerShell or Python.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

• Maintain database architecture docs, procedures, and standards.
• Perform capacity planning and support growth; participate in on-call rotations.

What You'll Do:

• Design, install, configure, maintain, and support PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server databases across on-premises and Azure environments
• Monitor database health and performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement tuning and optimization solutions to improve reliability and efficiency
• Develop, maintain, and validate backup and disaster recovery processes to ensure data availability and business continuity
• Administer database security, including user access, permissions, auditing, and compliance with company security standards and regulatory requirements
• Implement and support high-availability solutions, including Always On Availability Groups, replication technologies, and failover capabilities
• Troubleshoot and resolve database-related issues involving performance, connectivity, availability, corruption, and application integrations
• Partner with development teams to optimize database schemas, stored procedures, queries, and overall database design
• Develop and maintain database architecture documentation, operational procedures, and system standards
• Perform capacity planning and forecasting to support future growth and evolving business needs
• Participate in the on-call rotation to provide support for critical database systems and production incidents

Basic Requirements:

• Degree or equivalent and typically requires 7+ years of relevant, progressive database administration experience supporting production database environments
• Strong expertise administering PostgreSQL and/or Microsoft SQL Server in enterprise environments
• Experience with database installation, configuration, performance tuning, security administration, backup and recovery, and high availability solutions
• Proficiency with PL/pgSQL and/or T-SQL, including query tuning and optimization
• Experience troubleshooting complex database issues and implementing effective long-term solutions
• Experience supporting databases hosted in cloud environments, preferably Microsoft Azure
• Experience using automation and scripting technologies such as PowerShell or Python
• Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work independently while partnering effectively with cross-functional technical teams

Preferred Skills & Experience:

• Experience supporting additional relational database management systems such as Oracle or MySQL
• Familiarity with cloud database platforms and managed services, including Azure SQL Database, AWS RDS, or Google AlloyDB
• Experience implementing database automation and operational efficiencies through scripting and tooling
• Exposure to database monitoring and observability solutions
• Experience supporting high-availability and disaster recovery architectures in cloud and hybrid environments
• Experience working within healthcare or other regulated environments

$115,500 - $192,500
