Job summary

Cedar Electronics is seeking a senior data scientist to leverage industry data and drive business solutions. You will identify data opportunities, extend data with third-party sources, and analyze internal and external data to support product development and marketing strategies.

You will build custom data models and ML algorithms, develop testing frameworks, and coordinate with cross‑functional teams to monitor model performance and data accuracy.

Qualifications

  • Master’s in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science or another quantitative field preferred; STEM graduates considered DOE
  • 10+ years of experience manipulating data sets and building statistical models
  • Railroad Industry experience is a plus
  • Coding knowledge and experience with multiple languages, primarily Python
  • Knowledge of statistical and data mining techniques: GLM/Regression, Random Forest, Boosting, Trees, text mining, social network analysis, etc.
  • Experience querying databases and using statistical languages: R, Python, SQL, SAS
  • Experience using web services: Redshift, S3, Spark, etc.
  • Experience creating and using advanced ML algorithms and statistics: regression, simulations, scenario analysis, modeling, clustering, neural networks
  • Experience with distributed data/computing tools: Map/Reduce, Hadoop, Hive, Spark, MySQL
  • Experience visualizing data for stakeholders using: Periscope, Business Objects, D3, ggplot

Job description

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Work with stakeholders throughout the company and industry to identify opportunities for leveraging industry data to drive business solutions
  • Extending company’s data with third party sources of information when needed
  • Mine and analyze data from existing company databases as well as customer databases to drive optimization and improvement of product development, marketing techniques and business strategies, using state-of-the-art methods
  • Assess the effectiveness and accuracy of new data sources and data gathering techniques
  • Develop custom data models and algorithms to apply to data sets
  • Develop machine and deep learning based algorithms that eliminates or minimizes manual data processing or reporting
  • Develop various testing frameworks and test model quality
  • Coordinate with different functional teams to implement models and monitor outcomes
    Develop processes and tools to monitor and analyze model performance and data accuracy
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to travel up to 30% of the time to customer offices, railroad track testing sites, and on TrackSTAR® testing vehicles
  • Ability to walk on rough ground/railroad track, climb vehicle ladders, inclines, and work on vehicle systems in the field or shop
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
  • Ability to handle typical weather extremes when working in the field
  • Willingness to wear PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, steel toed boots) as required
  • General office/home environment
QUALIFICATIONS

    • Coding knowledge and experience with multiple languages, primarily Python
    • Knowledge and experience in statistical and data mining techniques: GLM/Regression, Random Forest, Boosting, Trees, text mining, social network analysis, etc.
    • Experience querying databases and using statistical computer languages: R, Python, SQL, SAS, etc.
    • Experience using web services: Redshift, S3, Spark, etc.
    • Experience creating and using advanced machine learning algorithms and statistics: regression, simulation, scenario analysis, modeling, clustering, decision trees, neural networks, etc.
    • Experience with distributed data/computing tools: Map/Reduce, Hadoop, Hive, Spark, MySQL, etc.
    • Experience visualizing/presenting data for stakeholders using: Periscope, Business Objects, D3, ggplot, etc.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with an emphasis on business solutions for our customer base
  • Experience working with and creating data architectures
  • Ability to communicate technical verbiage to a non-technical audience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for coordinating across teams
  • A drive to learn and master new technologies and techniques
  • Maintain a valid driver license and abide by our Corporate Fleet Policy
  • Ability to successfully complete all pre-employment testing required by Holland L.P
