Job description

As a Senior Data Engineer on the Assortment and Space Planning Data Science team at Home Depot/THD, you will design and operate data pipeline infrastructure and data products that support self-service analytics and business applications. The role combines data validation and ETL, pipeline architecture, and cross-functional collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

• Implement data coding validation and ETL to support successful data integration.
• Perform backup and optimization work to maintain performance and ensure data integrity, including code, configuration, and testing activities.
• Design, create, and maintain an optimal data pipeline architecture aligned to business requirements.
• Partner with team leads and cross-functional stakeholders to assess business requirements and communicate pipeline opportunities.

Position Purpose

Within the Assortment and Space Planning Data Science team, Senior Data Engineers translate business requirements into the infrastructure needed to structure and deliver data for self-service analytics and hardened business applications. You will acquire datasets aligned to business needs and develop pipelines that transform raw data into actionable information.

The role also includes building, testing, and maintaining data pipeline architectures, creating data validation methods and data quality tooling, and developing, hosting, and maintaining data products. Reliability and confidence are improved through monitoring, testing, and validation. You will use modern data engineering techniques to cleanse, organize, and transform data, while maintaining, defending, and updating data structures and integrity through automated processes.

As a senior contributor, you will establish design standards and assurance processes for data pipelines and applications to support compatible and operable data connections, flows, and storage. You will review internal and external business and product requirements and recommend system and storage changes or upgrades. In addition, the position mentors and coaches less experienced engineers, partners closely with data science, analytics, and application engineering teams, and communicates pipeline decisions and data quality tradeoffs to technical and non-technical audiences. The work requires strong technical judgment, effective communication at all levels, and the ability to balance durable design standards with near-term data needs.

Required Qualifications

• Must be eighteen years of age or older.
• Must be legally permitted to work in the United States.
• Must have a bachelor's or master's degree in a quantitative or technical field (such as Computer Science, Engineering, or Statistics) or relevant work experience.
• 6+ years of relevant work experience.
• Demonstrated experience in data architecture, data warehousing, and dimensional modeling.
• Demonstrated experience developing and testing ETL/ELT jobs and pipelines, configuring orchestration, automated CI/CD, writing automation scripts, and supporting pipelines in production.
• Experience with Dataform or dbt for data transformation and pipeline orchestration.
• Experience with Python or other high-level programming languages.
• Experience defining and capturing metadata and rules associated with ETL processes.
• Experience building batch and streaming pipelines.
• Experience writing analytical SQL queries and performance-tuning queries (preferably Google BigQuery).
• Ability to stitch and maintain data from multiple sources.
• Ability to optimize pipeline runtime and lower cost on slot and storage consumption.
• Ability to prioritize requests and manage a pipeline roadmap.
• Experience coaching junior engineers to improve code, best practices, and understanding of data engineering principles.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills at all levels.

Working Conditions

Work is located in a comfortable indoor area. Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable. Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position with frequent opportunity to move about. On rare occasions, there may be a need to move or lift light articles.

Minimum Education

The knowledge, skills, and abilities typically acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program or equivalent degree in a field related to the job.
