Job Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated Sr. Controls Engineer to support the design, development, integration, and testing of safety-critical, real-time control systems for unmanned and optionally manned ground vehicles.
The primary responsibility of this position is Vehicle Control Module (VCM) controls development and embedded software engineering. The Sr. Controls Engineer will work collaboratively with cross-functional engineering teams supporting both prototype and production vehicle programs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform controls software development, hardware selection, technical investigations, and systems engineering activities in accordance with company and industry standards.
- Develop and peer review safety-critical controls software for unmanned and optionally manned ground vehicles based on defined requirements.
- Develop model-based controls software using MATLAB/Simulink.
- Write, analyze, review, and maintain software and system requirements.
- Develop and execute software unit tests, integration tests, and system-level tests.
- Conduct software and controls testing in both simulation and real-world vehicle environments.
- Perform failure analysis using test data and recommend corrective actions and issue resolutions.
- Develop, analyze, and maintain system architecture models, requirements, and technical documentation.
- Support supplier and customer testing activities, including occasional off-site travel.
- Maintain configuration management of software source code, engineering artifacts, and releases.
- Prepare technical documentation, engineering reports, presentations, cost studies, project estimates, technical proposals, and feasibility studies.
- Establish priorities and coordinate technical tasks within larger development programs.
- Communicate effectively with suppliers, internal teams, customers, and external technical resources regarding engineering and controls-related matters.
- Process engineering information in accordance with CMMI Level 3 procedures and software safety processes.
- Participate in Agile development activities, peer reviews, release management, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support multiple projects or assigned portions of projects with limited complexity.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Maintain regular attendance and comply with company policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- 3+ years of related engineering experience.
- Experience with model-based software development using MATLAB/Simulink.
- Experience writing and managing software requirements.
- Experience writing and executing software unit tests.
- Experience programming embedded controllers using C/C++, MATLAB/Simulink, and/or PLC programming languages such as Structured Text.
- Experience with version control systems.
- Strong software and controls system design skills.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to travel up to 20% of the time.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with embedded vehicle control systems and model-based software development using MATLAB/Simulink.
- Experience with vehicle dynamics and controls features such as ABS, ESC, AEB, Forward Collision Warning, or other active safety systems.
- 3+ years of safety-critical software development experience.
- Experience with Systems Engineering processes and SysML.
- Experience with Cameo Systems Modeler or MagicDraw.
- Experience authoring and managing requirements, version control, release management, and peer-review systems.
- Familiarity with safety standards including MIL-STD-882E, ISO 26262, IEC 61508, and UL 4600.
- Experience developing software for on-road or off-highway vehicle control systems.
- Experience with networked communications such as CAN Bus, Ethernet, and V2V.
- Familiarity with vehicle dynamics, mechanics, and electrical systems.
- Experience working within Agile software development environments.
- Strong understanding of embedded software architecture and real-time control systems.
- Experience troubleshooting controls and software issues using test and vehicle data.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
- Minimum 3 years of related professional experience.
