Job summary

Kiewit is seeking a Sr. Civil Estimator for our Central District, located in the Lenexa Kansas area office.

You will develop and lead complete estimates for self-performed civil work across heavy civil, highway, bridge and utility projects, working with preconstruction and field teams to drive accurate bids. The ideal candidate has 5+ years of civil estimating experience on EPC and heavy civil projects, strong mentorship abilities, and proficiency with estimating tools.

  • Develop and lead complete estimates and quantity takeoffs for self-performed civil scopes.

We have a large backlog of work in the Power, Water, Industrial and Heavy Civil sectors and are looking for a Sr. Civil Estimator to join our team! Estimating is not a back-office function at Kiewit -its a core business driver! Estimating determines how we work, how we plan work and protects the company from necessary risk! In this role you will be be trained to lead estimates, work with our preconstruction and construction teams, supporting a variety of Infrastructure self-performed projects. This division of Kiewit executes hands-on construction in the infrastructure market performing mass grading/excavation, drainage, paving, utility work, earthwork, site development, concrete, asphalt for large scale highway/bridge projects, aviation projects, rail/transit, reservoirs, and heavy water/wastewater. District Overview

Kiewit’s Central District is one of our largest infrastructure districts specializing in heavy civil, structural concrete/bridge, water/wastewater, and transportation projects. We self-perform work such as mass grading, drainage, paving, underground piping, underground utility infrastructure, and more - so be ready to get your hands dirty! While headquartered in Denver, Colorado, the majority of our work is concentrated in the Central and South-Central regions of the United States. We are looking for people committed to the construction industry rather than design.

Location

This position will be located for the Kansas City metro area, in our Lenexa Kansas Area office.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and lead complete estimates and quantity/material takeoffs for self-performed civil construction scopes of work for design/build, design/bid/build and EPC projects for ground upinfrastructure projects (Heavy Civil, Highway, Bridge, Rail/Transit, Utilities, Drainage, Aviation and Infrastructure portions of power plants)
  • Review owner plans and specifications to develop a comprehensive understanding of the project; develop plan for the actual construction to serve as basis for the estimate.
  • Review and assist with proposals and other documentation to prepare cost estimates. Review all bid and contract documents and home office legal department opinions.
  • Conduct site investigation prior to forming a plan of operations to identify any problems or conditions of an unusual nature that may be present.
  • Participate in constructability reviews, Collaborate with project managers, design engineers, superintendents, clients and other Kiewit districts to align expectations, phasing and scheduling of the work to ensure accuracy within the estimate.
  • Stay abreast of trends and developments, such as new equipment, methods and procedures that are developing in the industry.
  • Provide leadership and strategy in subcontractor and vendor selection process; May lead small estimating teams and lead estimates for projects.
  • Prepare special engineering studies or reports required by certain bid items or conditions. Consult with clients/owners on various problems discovered during bid preparation, design/construction schedule changes, to ensure estimate stays on track.
Qualifications
  • BS in engineering, construction, estimating or similar field, and a minimum of 5+ years' related estimating infrastructure experience. Ideal candidate has demonstrated experience with estimating infrastructure self-performed construction projects (civil, earthwork, drainage, structural/bridge, grading, concrete, form-work, asphalt, underground utilities). If no degree, a minimum of 10+ years experience combined in Estimating, Field Construction/Superintendent experience required
  • Experience leading estimates and small estimating teams, providing coaching/mentoring is required at this level
  • Exceptionally strong attention to detail, communication, interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office products (e.g. Excel, Work, Outlook, PowerPoint) and proficient with various estimating tools and eager to learn "InEight"
  • Ability to perform estimating duties as outlined above, ability to consult with stakeholders in bid preparation, and interface with clients and perform preconstruction functions.
  • Ability to go to site locations as required for walkdowns, and other estimating related functions
