Job summary

AWS Data Centers team in North America seeks a senior Data Center Civil Engineer to lead civil design for prototypical Data Center sites. You will manage external consultants and guide internal engineers through design, permitting, and construction coordination across multiple campuses.

You will mentor engineers, develop design standards, and ensure cost-effective solutions while working with internal architectural, structural, MEP, security, and environmental teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field.
• Knowledge of building codes and regulations for your region.
• Experience owning and leading significant projects from concept to deployment.
• 10+ years of progressive site civil engineering experience focused on large-scale industrial, commercial, and mission-critical developments.
• Previous hyperscale data center development experience is preferred.
• Licensed Professional Civil Engineer (PE) registration is required.
• Demonstrated expertise in the design and construction of large-scale industrial utility and distribution systems, including domestic water, sanitary sewer, industrial water and wastewater, stormwater management, medium voltage duct banks, fiber optic networks, and construction phase services including problem solving, RFI, Submittals, etc.

Responsibilities

• Manage external civil design consultants through the Data Center design and construction process.
• Review designs for site layout, mass grading, drainage, power substations, utilities, and pavement.
• Lead permitting, development, and civil design and construction coordination of multiple data center campuses.
• Coach and mentor lower level engineers.
• Coordinate with internal and external architects, structural, MEP engineers, security, environmental and geotechnical engineers as a technical resource and civil design leader.
• Own and develop cost- and time-efficient site layouts with utilities and roads.
• Communicate design standards to internal and external project partners.
• Develop and maintain design standards, templates, and specifications for Data Centers and infrastructure.
• Create, review, and release design RFPs for projects including DCs and special facilities.
• Foresee and manage expectations regarding cost and schedules with Technical Program Managers.
• Develop and lead initiatives to improve cost, quality, schedule, and consistency.
• Travel for site assessments, design meetings, and AHJ interfacing (15–25%).

Education

Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field

As a Data Center Sr. Civil Engineer at AWS, you will lead Civil Engineering designs for Amazon Data Centers. You will be part of a highly creative and efficient design team comprised of Architects, Engineers, and Designers tasked with solving problems and challenging the status quo. As a subject matter expert, you will have a direct impact on the design of prototypical Data Center sites, provide technical design guidance and vendor oversight, solve large-scale implementation issues, and build a strong understanding of data center campus site design and program requirements.

Key job responsibilities

• Manage our external civil design consultants through the Data Center design and construction process.
• Review designs for site layout, mass grading, grading and drainage, power substations, dry and wet utilities, pavement, etc.
• Lead permitting, development, and civil design and construction coordination of multiple fast-paced data center campuses simultaneously on a regional level.
• Assist, coach and mentor lower level engineers.
• Coordinate with internal and external architects, structural, and MEP engineers, physical and technical security, environmental and geotechnical engineers, etc. as a technical resource and civil engineering design leader.
• Own and develop cost and time efficient data center site layout, incorporating grading, utilities, and road patterns while maintaining flexibility for design evolution
• Effectively communicate design standards to internal and external project partners.
• Develop and maintain design standards, template drawings, and specifications related to site civil design for Data Centers and supporting infrastructure.
• Create, review, and release design RFPs for various projects, including DCs and special program facilities.
• Foresee and manage Technical Program Managers expectation regarding project-specific cost and schedules variables.
• Develop and lead initiatives aimed at improving cost, quality, schedule, and consistency
• Travel for site assessments, internal design meetings, construction review, and interfacing with authorities having jurisdiction (15 to 25%)

• Proven ability to research and implement innovative design and construction methods to reduce project costs and accelerate schedules.

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
