Job Summary

Reviews inpatient records to identify the diagnosis and procedure codes performed during the patients stay. Ensures that the records are valid and in accordance with coding conventions and guidelines. Works on routine assignments within defined parameters, following established procedures and receiving daily instructions on work.

Job Requirements

• High School Education/GED or equivalent (Required)
• Associate’s/Technical Degree or equivalent combination of education/related experience (Preferred)
• Working knowledge of hospital Cerner EMR (Required)
• Three years of inpatient coding experience (Preferred)
• Experience in a health care setting (Required)

Licenses/Certifications

• AHIMA Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) (Required)

Essential Functions

• Abstracts and assigns ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and PCS codes from the inpatient patient record to ensure accurate MS-DRG and APR-DRG assignment, provide required data for reimbursement and statistical submissions, and validate appropriate dates of service against documentation in the EMR.
• Generates compliant physician queries and collaborates with clinical documentation integrity and quality departments to identify HAC/PSI and communicate issues affecting inpatient records.
• Audits medical records to ensure proper coding is completed and to ensure compliance with federal and state regulatory agencies; applies coding guidelines, conventions and quarterly coding clinics.
• Provides coding feedback and education to departmental leadership regarding completeness and accuracy of documentation and physician coding practices; facilitates revisions with appropriate departments.
• Follows up coding holds and revenue cycle department holds; communicates via email as required.
• Maintains required online Healthstream education courses and attends meetings and training related to coder education, audit reviews and inpatient coder roundtable meetings.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Location & Compensation

Location: Roseville, California (Sacramento metropolitan area)

Pay Range: $31.41 to $47.07 per hour; additional compensation available through differentials, shift incentives, bonuses, etc.

Shift Length: 8 Hours; Assignment Category: Part-time regular.
