Job Summary

Acuity is where bold ideas become intelligent, connected products. As a Software Squad Leader in our Electronics organisation, you will join a high‑energy engineering environment working at the intersection of embedded software, wireless connectivity, cloud‑connected applications, IoT and AI. Based in our Cork office, you will lead a multidisciplinary Scrum team developing firmware, software controllers, wireless communication features and configuration and calibration tools for Acuity's next‑generation LED drivers and lighting control systems.

You will combine hands‑on engineering expertise with technical leadership, architectural thinking and a practical understanding of AI‑assisted development. Working closely with Product Owners, Solution and System Architects, hardware, firmware, software, quality and global engineering teams, you will translate complex product needs into clear technical direction and high‑quality delivery. You will mentor engineers, contribute directly to design and implementation, and help the squad use AI responsibly to accelerate analysis, development, testing, documentation and knowledge discovery without compromising engineering judgement, security or product quality.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
  • Provide technical direction for the squad across firmware, backend and frontend components, guiding architecture, design decisions, implementation quality and alignment with Acuity engineering standards.
  • Collaborate with Solution and System Architects to translate system‑level vision and high‑level architecture into clear, executable engineering plans and maintainable software designs.
  • Lead the responsible adoption of AI‑assisted engineering practices within the squad, using AI to support requirements analysis, design exploration, code generation and refactoring, test creation, debugging, documentation and knowledge discovery while ensuring outputs are independently reviewed and validated.
  • Contribute hands‑on to software controllers, configuration tools and user interfaces using C#, JavaScript and React, and develop embedded C firmware for next‑generation software controls networks.
  • Work across firmware, application logic and cloud‑connected components, engaging directly with hardware for integration, debugging, validation and investigation of complex system behaviour.
  • Design and implement connected‑product capabilities using TCP, UDP, BLE, Thread and related protocols, including device provisioning, secure communication flows and network‑level behaviour.
  • Partner with the Product Owner to shape backlog items, clarify requirements, assess technical feasibility and support Agile planning, refinement, reviews and retrospectives.
  • Review human‑written and AI‑generated designs, code, tests and technical documentation for correctness, maintainability, security, traceability and alignment with architectural principles.
  • Mentor and coach engineers in engineering practices, problem solving, AI‑assisted workflows and technical decision‑making; foster collaboration, accountability, knowledge sharing and continuous learning.
  • Identify technical risks, dependencies and impediments, coordinate with cross‑functional and global teams to resolve them, and support the hiring, onboarding and development of engineering talent in Cork.

  • Solid knowledge of software architecture, system design, secure engineering, code review and maintainable development practices.
  • Experience with TCP, UDP, BLE, Thread or comparable connectivity technologies, plus hardware interfaces, device communication or firmware‑update workflows.
