SQL Server Database Administrator - Hybrid, OH

Remote (may require onsite presence a few days a week)

The Department of Children and Youth (DCY), Office of Information Services (OIS), is seeking an experienced database administrator to drive high-caliber database design, solution delivery, and support in a fast-paced and collaborative environment. The successful candidate must be an influential technical leader with deep database expertise and a collaborative style that promotes innovation and excellence. We are looking for an experienced SQL Server DBA managing MS SQL Server environments, including database VM servers.

The candidate will work with other database administrators across different agencies managing various database platforms, including Azure Cloud and Oracle Databases.

The SQL Server DBA will be responsible for managing Microsoft SQL Server database environments, including SQL Server databases on virtual machine (VM) servers. They will ensure best practices in database planning, design, configuration, performance, and capacity planning to ensure high reliability and performance. They will collaborate with the DBAITM1 team to meet team goals and metrics.

DCY is collaborating with a vendor to migrate SQL-based applications into Azure Cloud, and the DBA will lead efforts to understand current applications for effective management in the cloud environment.

  • Provide DBA support for distributed servers in a multi-datacenter environment.
  • Monitor daily activities and performance of complex SQL environments, analyze technical problems, recommend adjustments, and implement solutions.
  • Assist application development teams with SQL design and programming.
  • Configure SQL services (security, JDBC, clusters), plan, install, upgrade, and maintain SQL Server environments, and build new environments as needed.
  • Coordinate with network, IIS administrators, and storage teams for SQL server configurations.
  • Develop technical documentation, project plans, and interact with customers for proposed solutions.
  • Provide support for deploying code in non-production and production environments, troubleshooting, and resolving issues.
  • Support DevOps tools such as Ansible, Jenkins, Nexus, Maven, Bitbucket, Kony Mobile, Nginx, etc.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by management based on project needs.
  • Provide Tier III technical support, develop project plans, or recommend approaches.
  • Lead meetings on database design, implementation, and maintenance.
  • Design and plan hardware for cluster nodes, configure/setup cluster nodes, interconnects, and storage, and install cluster and DBMS software.
  • Monitor load balancing, tune cluster parameters, and configure standby servers.
  • Implement log shipping, replication, and other high-availability solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership to foster innovation and automation.
  • Support strategic planning for database architecture, resource management, and capacity growth.
  • Ensure best practices in database design, configuration, performance, and resilience.
  • Evaluate and propose improvements for performance and cost optimization.
  • Identify inefficiencies and oversee their resolution.
  • Plan capacity and resource expansion for scalability.
  • Implement risk management controls and ensure compliance with policies.
  • Lead incident resolution efforts and coordinate corrective actions.
  • Research and recommend database products, services, and standards.
  • Manage virtualized infrastructure across Unix, Linux, and AIX systems.
  • Update storage structures and database security protocols regularly.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to less experienced personnel.

Additionally, work with project management to support and communicate effectively with clients regarding deployments and upgrades.
