Job summary

Carman Solutions Group in Southfield, MI is seeking an experienced SQL DBA for a 6+ month contract to hire. Hybrid work with open relocation, requiring strong SQL Server administration across dev, test, and production environments.

The role focuses on performance tuning, security, backup/recovery, and database migration to cloud platforms. Occasional on-call support and collaboration with security/compliance teams are included.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in computer science or IT.
• 4+ years of production SQL Server administration experience.
• Strong knowledge of T-SQL, indexing, and query optimization.
• Experience with HIPAA/PCI compliance is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and administer Microsoft SQL Server databases across environments.

• Implement backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and administer Microsoft SQL Server databases across development, test, and production environments;
• Monitor database performance, availability, capacity, and resource utilization to ensure optimal operation;
• Monitor database growth and proactively recommend storage, performance, and scalability improvements;
• Troubleshoot and resolve database performance issues and other database-related incidents;
• Design, implement, and maintain database maintenance plans, including index management, statistics updates, and integrity checks;
• Implement and maintain database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery solutions to meet recovery objectives;
• Perform database restorals and periodically validate backup integrity and recoverability;
• Participate in disaster recovery and business continuity testing activities;
• Collaborate with software development and business analysis teams to review and make recommendations on database design, schema changes, and application deployments;
• Implement and maintain database security controls, including user access management, role-based permissions, encryption, and auditing;
• Work alongside IT security and compliance teams to ensure databases meet HIPAA, PCI DSS, and other regulatory requirements;
• Develop and maintain SQL scripts, stored procedures, automation processes, and database documentation;
• Assist with the migration of on-premises databases to cloud-based platforms, including Azure SQL services where applicable;
• Improve current and, if missing, create new processes and procedures for database administration, troubleshooting, and operational support;
• Stay up to date on emerging database technologies, security practices, and industry standards;
• Provide on-call and after-hours support as needed; and
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field;
• Proven experience (4 years) administering Microsoft SQL Server databases in a production environment;
• Thorough knowledge of SQL Server administration, T-SQL development, database performance tuning, indexing, and query optimization;
• Experience managing SQL Server security, permissions, authentication, auditing, and encryption;
• Experience with PowerShell or other scripting languages for automation is a plus;
• Understanding of cybersecurity principles and best practices related to database security;
• Experience supporting healthcare, financial, or other highly regulated environments is preferred;
• Familiarity with monitoring and performance management tools such as SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), Redgate, SolarWinds, SentryOne, or similar platforms is a plus;
• Excellent troubleshooting skills with the ability to analyze complex database issues;
• Strong organizational and multitasking skills;
• Strong writing skills for creating technical documentation, operational procedures, and compliance-related materials;
• Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team; and
• Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.
