Job summary

Harvard University is seeking a skilled Firesafety Technician to install, inspect, test, and maintain water-based fire suppression systems across campus facilities.

Responsibilities include piping work, valves, pumps, and devices, reading plans, and coordinating with teams. Requires a State Journeyman sprinkler license and a valid driver’s license; overtime may be required. This is a 12-month term appointment.

Qualifications

  • Five years’ experience with water-based fire suppression systems.
  • Current Sprinkler license (State Journeyman or higher) preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, inspects, tests and maintains water-based fire suppression systems.
  • Modifies piping, pumps, valves and sprinkler devices as needed.
  • Interprets mechanical plans and drawings for install/repair work.
  • Assists in testing other fire safety systems and provides customer support.
  • Works independently or in a team under supervision, with safety as a priority.

Job Description
Job Summary

Facilities Maintenance Operations (FMO) offers building & landscape maintenance, and custodial services to Harvard faculties and departments on a fee-for-service basis. All services are provided in strict accordance with customer-determined standards. As such, FMO operates as an in-house alternative to contractor services and therefore must manage itself under the same principles that guide any successful maintenance service business.

Job-Specific Responsibilities
  • Installs, modifies, inspects and tests all types of water-based fire suppression systems and associated equipment.
  • Fabricates, installs, modifies and repairs associated piping systems.
  • Installs and repairs flow control valves, fire pumps and sprinkler devices.
  • Performs all installation, maintenance and inspection in accordance with applicable standards and requirements of the National Fire Protection Association, Life Safety Code (Massachusetts State Building Code) and/or established compliance requirements of the Authority Having Jurisdiction.
  • Interprets and updates mechanical plans, drawings and prints as necessary.
  • Required to assist in the inspection and testing of other fire safety systems including fire alarms, extinguishers, fire escapes, and hydrants.
  • Provides responsive customer support in all phases of building maintenance and operations.
  • Assists and advises customers on fire suppression system solutions and provides follow-up on progress and status of work.
  • Performs other core skills of the trades and related duties as required.
  • May be assigned to work independently or as part of a multi-trade team under the guidance and direction of the Area Supervisor and/or Working Foreperson.
  • Must observe and comply with all standard safety codes and practices and perform work in accordance with recognized trade and University standards.
  • Required to wear a clean, neat uniform and maintain a professional image at all times.
  • Required to wear safety equipment and clothing when appropriate and/or required.
  • Willing to work in research laboratory environments and around hazardous materials.
  • Willing to accept a reasonable amount of overtime in support of group business needs.
  • Required to supply a complete set of hand tools.
Working Conditions
  • This is a term position
  • Emergency Status Designation: Critical Operations Personnel (required to provide on-site support during emergency situations as determined by management).
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to stoop and bend repeatedly and work on hands and knees and other awkward positions for extended periods.
  • Must be able to lift up to a minimum of 50 lbs. and to push, pull and transport piping and equipment in excess of 200 lbs. with others (may use chain falls and come along for heavier lifting).
  • Must be able to walk to and from various buildings or work sites carrying tools, equipment and other essentials.
  • Must be able to work alone, in confined spaces and extreme temperatures, climb multiple sets of stairs, work off ladders, staging, lifts or other elevated platforms.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
  • Five years’ related experience in the installation, operation, troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of all types of water-based fire suppression systems.
  • Must possess a current State Journeyman or higher Sprinkler license with a State Contractor License preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Experience and proficiency in the use of industry-recognized diagnostic testing equipment.
  • Able to perform mathematical calculations required to accurately size and install system components and devices.
  • Able to read and interpret detailed plans, drawings, specifications, operating manuals and other written materials associated with this trade. Must be able to effectively communicate and interact with peers and customers.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in desktop and smartphone technology platforms and applications.
  • Familiarity with equipment diagnostics, bar-coding, and related technologies desired.
Certificates and Licenses
  • Must possess a current State Journeyman or higher Sprinkler license with a State Contractor License preferred
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license

    • Monday: 6:00am - 2:30pm
    • Tuesday:6:00am - 2:30pm
    • Wednesday:6:00am - 2:30pm
    • Thursday:6:00am - 2:30pm
    • Friday:6:00am - 2:30pm
    • Saturday: Off
  • Compensation Range/Rate (including Shift Differential if applicable):
    • $52.34/hour
