Job summary

The TECO Energy Cooperative Education Program offers college students real-world experience through engineering co-op roles at Tampa Electric Company in Florida. Positions report to Energy Supply engineers and support diverse technical projects with varying scopes and timelines.

Co-ops involve electrical design, field data collection, testing, troubleshooting, and safety/compliance activities while exposing students to plant operations and power systems across multiple sites in Mulberry, Apollo

Qualifications

• The successful applicant must be enrolled in an accredited university for the first semester of the program.
• Proof of enrollment in the university’s co-op program is required; if unavailable, intern status will be considered.
• Electrical discipline is preferred; suitable for junior or senior students.

Responsibilities

• Support electrical design and drawing updates for plant projects.
• Collect field data, read equipment readings, and assist maintenance activities.
• Set up test equipment, debug components, validate designs and troubleshoot plant equipment.
• Assist with project planning and execution under supervision of the plant engineer.
• Follow strict safety rules and electrical code compliance; contribute to environmental safety.
• Learn plant operations and system interactions through hands-on observation.

Tampa Electric and its sister companies serve a role in providing critical services to our community during an emergency. Team members are required to participate in the response/recovery activities related to emergencies/disasters to maintain service to our Tampa Electric customers. Team members are required to work in their normal job duties or other assigned activities. Proper compensation will be made in accordance with the company's rules and procedures.

Position Summary/Details:

The TECO Energy Cooperative Education Program offers college degree-seeking students the opportunity for professional growth while meeting the business needs of the company. The program is an extension of the educational process, providing practical experience to complement formal classroom work. The co-op program recruits students from colleges to give them an opportunity to work in a professional environment related to their field of study. Work assignments are consistent with the work needs of the department and the company and provide meaningful and challenging work to the student. These engineering co-op positions will report to Energy Supply engineers and support a variety of technical projects ranging in complexity, scope and time spans

Key Responsibilities and/or Learning Objectives

The Electrical Engineering Co-op supports the plant electrical engineer with electrical system design, equipment maintenance and testing, field data collection, drawing updates, equipment troubleshooting, documentation management, and safety compliance. The role also provides practical experience with plant operations and electrical systems, including power distribution, motors, controls, protective relays, transformers, and generators.

• Electrical Design: Assist with creating new electrical drawings and updating existing drawings.
• Field Support: Collect technical data, record equipment readings, and assist with field activities for maintenance projects.
• Testing & Troubleshooting: Assist with setting up test equipment, performing component-level debugging, validating designs, and troubleshooting plant equipment.
• Project Assistance: Support project planning, implementation, and execution under the guidance of the plant engineer
• Safety & Compliance: Adhere to strict work safety rules, ensure electrical codes are met, and support environmental compliance
• Learning: Actively learn plant operations, system interactions (power electronics, controls, grid connection), and engineering principles through observation and instruction

Physical Location of Co-op

• Big Bend Power Station in Apollo Beach, FL
• Bayside Power Station in Tampa, FL
• Polk Power Station in Mulberry, FL (main location)

Working Conditions

• In addition to office work, student will work 50% of the time in the power station and service areas. Student will need to be hands on and be willing and able to work at heights on raised walkways, industrial environments, and constructions areas.

Education

The successful applicant should be enrolled in an accredited university as a college undergraduate or a graduate level post-secondary educational program in a related disciplinefor the first semester the student joins the program.

Co-Op Requirements

To qualify as a co-op student, enrollment in the university’s co-op program (proof ofenrollmentrequired); if not eligible for co-op program (or program unavailable), the student will be considered an intern.
