Job summary

The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York offers an Exhibition Design intern position for Spring 2027. Interns participate in design charrettes, review concepts with curators, and assist with layouts, maquettes, models, and presentation materials.

Opportunities to observe on the floor during installation are included, with a 16–21 hour weekly schedule. Applicants must be enrolled in architecture, exhibition design, or set design, possess 2D/3D drafting skills, and provide a portfolio PDF

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in architecture, exhibition design, or set design program.
  • 2D and 3D drafting skills required.
  • Facility with building study/models and finish models.
  • Ability to think abstractly and creatively, with attention to detail.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Able to work in a flexible, fast-paced environment on simultaneous projects.
  • Portfolio (PDF) to accompany resume and essay when applying.
  • Undergraduates and graduates currently enrolled in accredited programs are eligible.
  • Interest in art/history is a plus; all majors encouraged.
  • Previous museum experience not required.

Job description

Summary

The Whitney seeks an Exhibition Designinternfor Spring 2027.

Expected Projects & Assignments

  • Interns will participate in departmental design charrettes and meetings with exhibition curators to review design concepts and art layouts as well as planning meetings involving colleagues across the institution (via Zoom and in-person)
  • Interns will also assist in making art layouts, scaled maquettes of the artwork, study models, full scale mockups and presentation materials
  • When possible, interns will observe and assist on the floor during construction and installation

Stipend: $3,000

Duration: January 18 – April 26, 2027

Schedule: PT (16–21 hours/week)

  • Enrolled in architecture, exhibition design, or set design program
  • 2D and 3D Drafting Skills Required
