Job summary

Keiter CPA is seeking an Audit Intern to support our audit practice across multiple industries including for-profit, nonprofit, and ERISA/benefit plans. You will assist with audit testing, prepare working papers, and gain exposure to on-site client work while learning our audit processes end-to-end.

Ideal candidates are pursuing an accounting degree with at least one semester of intermediate accounting, and possess strong communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Formal accounting coursework and ongoing CPA-focused studies.
  • Strong written and oral communication with clients and teams.
  • Familiarity with audit software and data tools.

Responsibilities

  • Assist on audit engagements across multiple industries including for‑profit, nonprofit, and ERISA/benefit plan clients.
  • Perform audit testing procedures such as participant data testing, cash testing, payroll testing, and analytical procedures.
  • Help prepare and update audit documentation and workpapers referencing prior-year files.
  • Gain exposure to on-site audit work and interact with client personnel in real time.
  • Learn how audit teams plan, execute, and review engagements from start to finish.

What You'll Do:

As a Keiter Audit Intern, you will:

  • Assist on audit engagements across multiple industries, including for‑profit, nonprofit, and ERISA/benefit plan clients
  • Perform audit testing procedures, such as:
  • Participant data testing and contribution testing (ERISA/401(k))
  • Cash testing, payroll testing, investment testing, and analytical procedures
  • Substantive testing, rollforwards, and compliance testing
  • Help prepare and update audit documentation and workpapers, often referencing prior‑year files
  • Gain exposure to on‑site audit work, including interacting with client personnel and observing audit procedures in real time
  • Use audit software and tools such as CaseWare, XCM, ShareFile, client portals, and Excel
  • Learn how audit teams plan, execute, and review engagements from start to finish

What You’ll Bring:

  • Completion of at least one semester of an intermediate‑level accounting class
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and other computer skills
  • Interest in pursuing a career in public accounting and sitting for the CPA exam

Pay:

  • The anticipated hiring range for this position is $30.00-$32.50 and is dependent on relevant experience, qualifications, and skills.

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting or accounting systems
  • Have completed at least one semester of intermediate accounting

Core Skills You’ll Build:

  • Apply classroom accounting concepts to real client work
  • Develop strong Excel skills, including data cleanup, analysis, and review
  • Learn how to self-review work, respond to review notes, and improve accuracy
  • Communicate professionally with associates, seniors, managers, and partners
  • Manage time across multiple engagements and deadlines
  • Gain confidence asking questions, seeking feedback, and taking initiative to find work

Training & Support:

  • Participate in formal, in-person, training for the first week of the internship program
  • Work closely with a Performance Coach and a Buddy
  • Receive real‑time feedback, review notes, and direct verbal feedback throughout the internship
  • Learn how to navigate firm systems, workflows, and professional expectations

Internship Overview:

  • Schedule: 20 hours per week minimum, working in time blocks of 3-4 hours on any given day
  • Keiter will work with spring interns to create a schedule that accommodates their class commitments and academic priorities
  • Format: In-person, hybrid, and virtual options available. In-person experience is strongly encouraged for first‑time interns
  • Returning Interns: may be able to offer a virtual option depending on certain circumstances
  • Exposure to real client work, not just shadowing
  • Hands‑on experience using the same tools and processes as full‑time staff
  • Participate in firm events, networking opportunities, and intern group activities
  • A realistic preview of what a full‑time career at Keiter looks like
