Job summary

Marblehead YMCA is hiring a part-time Sports Specialist to coach youth basketball and other seasonal sports in Marblehead, MA. This role emphasizes creating a welcoming, inclusive environment and delivering engaging activities during evenings and weekends.

You will referee games, teach fundamentals, build positive relationships with families, and support camps and special events. Prior coaching, officiating, or playing experience is highly valued.

Qualifications

• Coaching experience with children of various ages and abilities.
• Strong basketball knowledge and experience playing, coaching, officiating, or teaching the game.
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.

Job Details: Job Location: LynchVan Otterloo YMCA - Marblehead, MA 01945, Position Type: Part Time, Salary Range: $17.00 - $23.00 Hourly, Job Shift: Evenings/Weekends, Sports Specialist Part-Time – Marblehead YMCA

What You'll Do

• Coach youth basketball practices, skills clinics, and seasonal leagues.
• Teach basketball fundamentals while promoting teamwork, confidence, and good sportsmanship.
• Referee games, keep score, and ensure a safe, positive experience for all participants.
• Lead engaging activities in a variety of seasonal sports, including basketball, soccer, flag football, volleyball, t-ball, and pickleball.
• Build meaningful relationships with participants and families through positive communication and encouragement.
• Assist with program setup, equipment management, private rentals, birthday parties, and special events.
• Support summer camps and seasonal sports programming throughout the year.
• Help create a welcoming environment where every child feels included, challenged, and successful.

Qualifications

You may be especially interested in this opportunity if you aspire to become an Athletic Director, Sports Program Manager, Camp Director, Recreation Director, or a leader within a nonprofit organization. This role also provides an excellent career foundation for recent graduates or students pursuing degrees in Sports & Recreation Management, Business, Exercise Science, Sports Medicine, Physical Education, Education, or related fields.

• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Availability to work Wednesday & Thursday from 3:30pm to 5pm and Saturday from 8:15am to 7pm
• Experience coaching, officiating, or participating in organized sports, with basketball experience strongly preferred.
• Experience working with youth and creating a positive, engaging environment.
• Strong communication, leadership, and relationship‑building skills.
• Ability to lead sports leagues, practices, clinics, and recreational programs while promoting teamwork, sportsmanship, and skill development.
