Job summary

St. Paul’s Senior Services, via the PACE program in San Diego, seeks a Staff Spiritual Counselor to provide compassionate spiritual care to Participants, their families, and staff. The role requires coordinating with interdisciplinary teams and clergy while upholding confidentiality in a healthcare setting.

Minimum credentials include an M. Div. with CPE, ordination, and 2+ years of healthcare spiritual counseling experience. Must be comfortable serving diverse faiths and aging adults.

Qualifications

  • Provide safe environment and communicate effectively with Participants and clients served by St. Paul’s PACE.
  • Sensitive to spiritual needs of persons who are dying and to care providers; work well in a team.
  • Ability to establish rapport through effective listening and to communicate patient care information to health staff.
  • Must have worked with seniors for at least 1 year.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver spiritual care to Participants, loved ones, guests, and staff in St. Paul’s PACE.
  • Respond to requests for spiritual care promptly; participate in worship opportunities and sacramental needs.
  • Coordinate with clergy and spiritual visitors from religious communities.
  • Maintain liaison with local clergy and Participants; attend IDT meetings as needed.
  • Assess spiritual needs and support families in coping with illness, trauma, and stress.
  • Document services provided and maintain confidentiality.
  • Represent St. Paul’s Senior Services in community and professional groups as required.

Job description

San Diego’s St. Paul’s PACE program (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly). This innovative program is for individuals 55 years or older, who are living with chronic illness, or disabilities and need coordinated medical care to continue living as independently as possible in their home and community. The healthcare teams at St. Paul’s PACE provide a hands-on approach coordinating medical, social, and home care services so individuals no longer need to manage their medical care alone.

This is a full-time position. The typical schedule is 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.

Job Summary:

The Staff Spiritual Counselor is responsible for the delivery of Spiritual care to Participants, their loved ones, guests, and, as appropriate, staff. Provides Spiritual care services in such a way as to accomplish the objectives of St. Paul’s PACE. Functions in such a manner that reflects the mission and vision of St. Paul’s PACE.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Participates in delivering and arranging for appropriate spiritual care to Participants, their loved ones and staff in specific areas of St. Paul’s PACE.
  • Actively participates in the delivery of Spiritual care, responds to requests for Spiritual care in a timely manner, participates in the offering of worship opportunities, and participates in the meeting of spiritual and sacramental needs.
  • Willingness to work with and meet the spiritual needs of people of all religious faith, age, gender, sexual orientation, race, and ethnic backgrounds
  • Participates in regular and special religious services as required.
  • Assists in the coordination of clergy and Spiritual visitors from the religious community.
  • Maintains liaison between local clergy and Participants.
  • Assesses Participants and family spiritual needs and assists families in using their faith in dealing with illness, trauma, and stress; visits newly admitted Participants in all St. Paul’s PACE facilities; visits Participants in acute hospitals; and follows up with Participants from previous visits when appropriate.
  • Documents Participants and family service provided.
  • Maintains a harmonious and working relationship with the Interdisciplinary team (IDT). Attend IDT morning meetings as needed.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all disclosures.
  • Supports staff in dealing with their emotion in the loss of a Participant.
  • Assists with faith and non faith issues in the healing process.
  • Adheres to all standards, policies and procedures of St. Paul’s Senior Homes & Services. Adheres to the code of ethics of the Association of Professional Spiritual Counselors.
  • Serves on committees and specials projects of St. Paul’s PACE as may be requested and assigned.
  • Represents St. Paul’s Senior Homes & Services in community and professional association group meetings as may be required or assigned.
  • Performs other duties as requested by Center Director and/or Executive Director.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must have demonstrable knowledge and skill necessary to provide a safe environment and communicate effectively with all age groups of Participants and/or clients served by St. Paul’s PACE.
  • Must be sensitive to the Spiritual needs of persons who are dying as well as of those who provide care, and be able to work well with other professional persons as a team member.
  • Ability to establish rapport with others through effective listening skills
  • Ability to work as a team member and communicate relevant patient care information to appropriate health care staff
  • Must have worked with seniors for a minimum of at least one year.
Education and/or Experience:
  • M. Div. Degree or its equivalent. Four units of CPE Clinical Spiritual Education desired.
  • Ordination by a recognized religious body.
  • A minimum of two years experience as a Spiritual Counselor in a healthcare setting is essential.
